Ever have a pedal you think is meh? only to find there are better ways to use it from a YouTube? I'm thinking of ZVex Fuzz Factory, EHX Synth9, or anything that is complex/multifunction, boss rc-3, harmonizer, EHX hog, etc?

Not really, but I generally avoid YT like the plague it is.
And I've been operating "complex" or "not understood" pedals and rack gear for pushing 30 years now.

Many players use pedals with the controls cranked way up. Effects are like herbs and spices in cooking, e.g., use use too much and your chicken dish tastes like oregano instead of chicken.
The best sounds are usually somewhere around 12:00 on the dial unless you're going for extreme wackiness, which is okay too.

I like simple pedals, but some I have need tweaking and for me, since I'm not so bright like to see someone run through different settings on different guitars. It actually saves me some time. I have an Ethos (Trainwreck voiced) pedal that I got great setting ideas from youtube. Of course now I have constant suggestions for dumble/trainwreck vidz lol. I agree most pedals sound great around 12, yep... challenge on youtube is finding a vid where someone isn't pushing everything so much you don't hear the nuance of the pedal.

Agree with Peegoo on the 'less is more' theory of pedals.

Funny - about a week ago my wife made chicken soup and said that it smelled like pizza. I gave it a whif and said, "it smells like pizza because of all the oregano you put in!"
But it's true. When I play at church, I have a pedal board that consists of a tuner, EQ, Tube Screamer, delay, and maybe chorus?...some of the other guitarists have more elaborate set-ups.
YouTube is a good place to get info, though.

Less is better for those who play well. Unfortunately that is not me

Tube Screamer...
decades ago I thought Meh... and passed.
somewhere, somehow... I discovered the Tone nob is not a Tone nob... but a mid nob to be used to match the mids the amp is dialed at. once I discovered that...
that was it.
