Is there anyone who knows of a product or procedure to improve the quality of an older windshield on a car? Something that they have experienced as "yes this had made seeing at night and in the rain better. Otherwise I guess I need to just get it replaced.

Yep
It’s called new glass.
You’re welcome!

I hate driving at night when it is raining. I have gone to letting my wife drive at night, unless I'm the only one going somewhere.
If it is raining in the daytime, put on polarized sunglasses. It actually works to help you see better. I found this out on my own about 10 years ago.

Wet pavement at dusk is the worst for me.

And don't forget the oncoming headlights of new vehicles with the new headlight technology...... The one thing I do is make sure to maintain and replace wiper blades. Wipe them down with alcohol and when you can wash the windshield with a mixture of Dove detergent. Amazing stuff to remove grease and grime from the windshield.

I drive a company car with 150k on it. It’s so sand blasted I can barely see through it during sunrise and sunset glare. I keep hoping a stone will crack it. ‘New glass’ is the correct answer. Lol

That's a safety issue, I'd make them replace it.

A windshield is something I never considered as needing replacement but its become a safety issue. I installed new wiper blades last week and the driver's side seems to have a defect. Last night I had to pull over on the interstate during a wet treated road with salt and ice mix. It was a choice of driving the interstate with actual contact with the asphalt or taking the backroads without any treatment. The light poles on the interstate actually make things worse. And then there are the often poorly designed modern headlights and the idiots who install aftermarket unfocused lights. A few days ago, I'm behind a tow truck with such overkill of flashing yellow LED lights that it caused a hazard. A single flashing yellow light gets the point across. I can see these hazard lights during stand still operations but while driving down the road, its blinding and dangerous. There doesn't seem to be any enforcement of lighting laws and so many drivers who are just on another planet when it comes to courtesy -- I'm tempted to go on the offense with lights of my own that smite for those who ignore the hint.

As far as I know, almost all car insurance policies will pay for a replacement windshield if it's sandblasted and affecting visibility. We've done it and the Car Talk guys said it's okay. Replace it and see an ophthalmologist.

I can sympathize, I am developing cataracts and it does not help that windshield is old. I drive at night when I get off work but the roads are pretty empty st 2 AM, except Friday. Other than that I really try to not drive after dark.

The near-microscopic chips and scratches can make forward vision horrible. I need one of those new cars with the automatic emergency braking so I stop terrorizing careless pedestrians that dash in front of me.

I’m getting to where it seems like almost everyone coming towards me has their brights on. I have flicked my lights at them to lower the beam. Then they show me their brights and it’s blinding. Oops sorry.
