Is there a way to stop automatic updates? This is the fourth time I have lost information due to the software updating. I keep things open that I'm working on, If I was to save everyday I'd have thousands of redundant files.
Unfortunately the software I'm using only supports windows. My win 7 machine died, and I had no choice but to use win 10. The 666 of software.

You and me both, K4.
My Windows 7 machine croaked back in January. Best computer ever. So I fired up this Win 10 machine that was my mom's. Like new, she didn't use it much.
Not much about it that I don't hate. Everything is difficult.

When Bill Gates was a child, he was tormented by bullies. Aside from some of the usual beat downs and wearing of "kick me" signs, he was often ripped off at lunch time. Once a week, he would just be sitting down (by himself) with his bag lunch, that always included Hostess Twinkies. Out of nowhere, his assigned bully for that day would snatch away his lunch sack and replace it with another, saying, "this one is much better than the one you had." He had no choice but to go with the update had been given. Even after being disappointed time and again, he would hold out hope that THIS time, his updated lunch would be better than what he had been forced to give up. But no. He would find his PB&J sandwich (white bread, no crust) replaced with Friskie's cat food on flat bread, his banana reduced to just the peel, and his beloved Twinkies wrapped in impenetrable duct tape. His can of soda pop, instead of having a pull tab, now required a beer can opener, "not provided in the current version of Lunch 10.12."
He never forgot his childhood. And now HE's the bully! He owns your lunch, the lunchroom, the playground and even the the tether ball pole! We didn't help him against the bullies, and now he's getting even. (If you're wondering what ever happened to his tormentors from years ago, they now toil in an Amazon fulfillment center, stuffing boxes with bubble wrap.)

Thanks, I set it to disabled.
I was doing some testing, running a scanner program monitoring an engine and the stupid windoze shut off and updated. All data lost. I want to yank the toe nails off the people who decided win 7 needed improving.

quick question. I have win 10, but shut my PC down at night. Have not had problems with updates messing with data etc. it's still a pain but just wondering if previous posters leave their PC's running 24/7. Oh I do not use the PC for work or Business.

My Windows 7 laptop is getting pretty old. On my next PC, I'm going to try Mint Linux and use WINE to run Windows software. I did it a while back with Ubuntu, and it generally worked pretty well. You couldn't run Microsoft software easily under WINE, but 3rd party stuff seemed to run just fine.

I’ve had Win 10 for about 4 years now and never a problem. I leave it on 24/7 and the updates don’t bother me because I always save my work before walking away.

Windows 10 updates. They attack at night. Like the Zombie Apocalypse. Solution, check for updates on your own by going into 'updates and security' in All Settings. I don't recommend getting behind on these updates, that has it's own kind of horror. Take control of your PC (recommended). Don't let it control you! You can also go in and pause the updates for 7 days at a time. You just have to remember to do it once a week (not recommended).

I typically reboot about once every couple months....at least with win 7. Win 10 seems to update and reboot itself about once a week or so. Regarding OP....why would you have a bunch of redundant files? Can't you just "save" (vs "save as...") so that it's just an updated version of the same file?

I wish my Win 10 desktop WOULD update. It's currently sitting at version 1909, and updates to 20H2 keep failing. I've tried auto updates, forced updates, update via media download. They all fail. I've tried about 5 or 6 things suggested by Microsoft forums. One finally gave a code indicating that it is quitting because it thinks some unspecified driver is not safe or compatible with Win version 20h2. I uninstalled a bunch of drivers for various devices (cameras, sound interfaces). Everything but my printer and network drivers. Still failed.
I'm afraid that my next step is going to be a bare metal install. That will be a mess to back up all kinds of data and then install applications and licenses all over again. Based on doing this once before (another machine), It will probably be about 3 days to get a functioning system again.
I really dislike Windows, especially their pushing a Microsoft account login and all their phone home and telemetry back to the home planet. All my other computers run linux. I keep one Windows PC for some Windows-specific software.

I'd recommend setting up the God folder. Google it for instructions, bits very easy and quick to do.
In short, opening the God folder gives you access toa fairly well organized list of all Win 10 options and setting. You can view or edit each setting from here. No more hunting for things.

We are just about to switch our office Macs for new Windows 10 machines. Get ready for the shock if you are not a windows person. I am a Windows person and it was quite a shock when I got my first apple product ( iPhone and iPad ) couldn’t hardly do anything with it until my daughter assisted me. After a few weeks I got the hang of it. Also, going from Windows 7 ( best OS) to Windows 10 had some sticker shock until I figured out how to use it. I have little trouble now after using it for 10 years at home and 6 years at work but I wish they left the Win7 format alone. I don’t know who the brainiac was that thought they should change it but they can lump them in with the idiot that thought up common core math 😂

Going from win7 to win 10 is like going from an automatic to a stick shift.
Finding files is completely different and not in an intuitive way.
My main gripe outside of it deciding to update while I was actively using a program, is I can close the lid at night and find all mu open programs closed when I open it back up in the morning. So all data lost.
I have 10 to 20 open tabs and programs at all times. When I want to go to sleep should I have to save each? Not with win7 but yes with win10.

I still don’t get what all the hate is about, but you like what you like I guess. Yeah, I don't get it either. The UI for all the Windows versions since about Windows 95 have been so similar it didn't take me long to figure them out. The "behind the scenes" stuff has been different but Google is always a source for figuring that stuff out. My first computer was a Commodore 64. After that I got one of the little Fat Macs with the tiny screen and nothing but a floppy drive. I moved through all of the little macs until I got a DOS based 286, then a 386, then a 486, then a Pentium 1 and went through all the Pentium models with my last one being Windows XP driven. Those first few versions of Windows required me to learn how they worked behind the scenes because they were always having problems that had to be fixed. Especially when adding external hardware to them. When I started using Windows 10 at work was the first time I was exposed to it. I was getting around in it and doing what I needed to do within minutes of powering it up. I don't get what all the fuss is about. My biggest issue was learning to use the new versions of MS Office that were required to run on the newer OS's. I'm still using Windows 8.1 on my desktop at home because my recording software is incompatible with Windows 10. I don't get what all the fuss is about.

So all data lost. Your laptop likely has a screensaver function (and timeout adjustment) — how about just leaving your laptop open all the time...?

This is what I don't like about it: I really dislike Windows, especially their pushing a Microsoft account login and all their phone home and telemetry back to the home planet. I don't have a google account, I don't have an Apple account, and I don't want a Microsoft account. I don't like the spying, either. I know it's pretty much inevitable, but I make it as hard as possible for them to spy on me, hence no accounts and I didn't install any of the spyware updates for Windows 7. I've also never been a fan of updating perfectly fine software just for the sake of updating. That seems to be a requirement of the Windows 10 model and all the subscription based software. I'm not talking about security updates, those are obviously important, but bloating software up with a bunch of new useless features while breaking or removing old useful features just to do it is a hard pass from me.

I have 10 to 20 open tabs and programs at all times. When I want to go to sleep should I have to save each? Not with win7 but yes with win1 I am sure other browsers are similar but on Windows 10 I use Microsoft Edge. I have startup set to load my favorite pages on startup. If I have important stuff I have been browsing with many tabs open I go to settings, Startup and temporarily switch to "Continue where you left off". Even if I reset computer it comes back up where I left off with all the tabs there. I can switch back to Startup to open pages (specific links I set up).

It's not just the browser, I don't care if tabs get closed, history function works. It's other programs where I lose data. Just going to have to change my habits or find an older machine that will run 7. Use this one for internet.

You probably already know this but Win7 is no longer supported with security issues so best you not connect it to the internet.

i prefer WIN7 but have learned to tolerate 10. i haven't had any problems YET. most of what i'm doing these days is with my Amateur Radio hobby, some recording/editing/and some image manipulation. nothing heavy or serious.
i tried UBUNTU for a while, and enjoyed it, but the software i need wasn't available.
i've actually started using several Android applications with success...

OK, I'm going to be the wet blanket here... you are blaming Win10 (which I agree leaves a lot to be desired) for your data management strategy. If you are not routinely saving your files and backing them up, you kind of get what you get. This is an issue if you run Win7, Win10, iOS, whatever. The reason Win10 updates all the time is it's patching security issues (a good thing). Typically one of the major exploits a virus/hacker/malware will use is getting into a system with unpatched zero day or unpatched known points of entry. So as annoying as it is, it's really trying to CYA for you. As mentioned above, if you are tired of Windows, try a known good Linux distribution. If you are computer savvy and your CPU supports hypervisors, install Oracle VM Virtualbox and try it.
