It happened again. I left the laptop open and running, went to the store and when I returned it was on the welcome screen and all my programs were closed. Luckily I saved them before I left.
I think it is new hard drive time for my old Toshiba laptop. It has Win 7.

I think you have something wrong. I have run windows 10 at home for quite a while and never had that issue.

It's just win 10 home. What am i doing wrong? This shouldn’t be happening. Something isn’t right. When you returned did you have to log back in on your laptop or simply wake your laptop back up by hitting a key on your keyboard?

Go to windows update settings and adjust your working hours and take a look at the last time your machine did an update in the history. This almost sounds like a hardware issue, perhaps you have a failing component. If you are savvy enough, you can go into the event viewer and see if it's throwing errors.

It's just win 10 home. What am i doing wrong? I have no idea, it just seems that shouldn’t be happening and that it doesn’t happen to anyone else who has Win 10. That makes me feeel like it’s an issue in your settings.

I don't see an auto-restart feature/option anywhere, so there must be a glitch occurring when either the computer screen or the computer itself goes into a sleep mode. You can set both of these to "Never" and this will probably solve your (immediate) problem:
Setup --> System --> Power & Sleep --> "Screen" and (computer) "Sleep"
These are drop-down menus on same page (Power & Sleep).
-- scroll down to see "Never" on both/either setting....
PS - Of the two features, it's probably the computer going to sleep that causes the problem; you might try setting that feature alone to "Never" and see how it goes, saving your screen....

My settings are 10 min. for screen, and 30 min. for computer itself. These are default values; I never looked at these before today. I’ve never had a K4 problem.

Make sure settings do not go into deep sleep hybernation mode. It is problematic. Check in power settings

If this wasn't mentioned, you can pause updates for up to 35 days. Just go to all settings/update & security/ advanced options (in second column bottom)after clicking on advanced options, you will see "pause updates" at the bottom of the page.
You can also turn on the button that notifies you if your computer needs to restart for an update.

You are correct about sleep mode not causing a problem. I was referring to deep sleep hybrid hybernate sleep in Windows 10. Unless they have fixed it I experienced coming out of that deep sleep would cause the computer to intermittently hang or reset. I disabled it several years ago and never allow it to go into anything but regular sleep mode.

It was in the update settings. I had my Son look it over and he made some changes and it has not happened since.
I was always interested in mechanical things so computers passed me by. I did have fun playing with win 3.1
I'd rather make a sundial out of steel than use auto cad and a 3D printer. My kid just bought a 3D printer that can print 1 foot by 2 feet.
The world turns.

I am more than willing to re-learn that system rather than continue with the extreme slowness of our 11+ year old Macs.

I do believe they are Dell machines. No tower, just a small box that attaches to the back of the monitor.
We rarely use CD/DVD anymore, but we’re getting an external to hook up if the need arises.

Yep! we typically used Dell laptops or towers until last 2 years when they went to those very small boxes. Amazing In the Radio Electronics shop we used the boxes except for 3 laptops to take out in the field to program radios as needed

It will actually be perfect that they have those boxes now, as we are all used to Macs. Some of our furniture was even bought with the Macs in mind, and a traditional tower would have to be on then floor at the user’s feet.
My desk has cabinets on both sides that could house a tower. But obviously I have those cabinets filled up with other stuff that Inwpuld have to move.
I believe it was $55 more for the box than the tower, and we only have 7 workstations so the added cost wasn’t so bad.

An example. Fire tv just "updated" It is nothing like the previous version, which worked well.
My grandaughter tonight flipped out over the supposed "improvments" So it aint just me. Why fix what aint broken. Yea I'm having a hard time finding my content. Special place in hell comes to mind.

I didn’t notice anything on my Fire TVs. Are you talking about the stick or the actual Fire TVs?

I guess the TVs didn’t get it. Or mine isn’t set to update automatically, or I only really watched Netflix last night which has its own button on the remote.

I hope your change is painless. Right now I have 8 computers set up and running in my office, they are going to remote in after hours to start the process. They said it will be a week total before everything is up and running. So far, best I can say is they look nice.

Only problem I have with Windows 10 is when I scroll down a page, and when I want to scroll back up, the cursor turns into some kind of round object that doesn't really want to go where I want it to go.
