Just put a Fender pure vintage 64 bridge pup in my number #1 tele. (awesome pup by the way)
Dialed in the Factory height specs and thought it could be just a smidgeon less bright on the treble.. half turn of the trusty screw driver on the center front height screw, hence angled the pup ever so slightly tilted forward ... Perfection to my ears.
Ya just can't do that with a lot of other guitars.. two screws to adjust the height works when you have adjustable pole pieces... if no adjustable pole pieces... well you get what you get
Just another thing that says Leo got it right the first time.

Agreed.
I think there are a lot of great pickup designs that work horribly because they were never designed with good height adjustments. I'd love to see P-90s on rings, and more humbuckers on rings with 3 or 4 screws. A lot of the DeArmond/Filtertron variations suffer from this, too. Amazing pickups that never get dialed in properly.

Yes, it is a great design. Makers such as Yamaha and Carvin have used three screws to hang humbuckers in their frames and control the angle at which they can be set. Some Carvins have four screws per pickup. Why more makers don't do this is goofy to my way of thinking. Years ago I came up with a fix for this problem on my Flying V. I added a 3rd ear to each pickup (chopped from an old humbucker base plate and soldered on), along with a spring and a screw:

I make Filtertrons height adjustable by adding a bar across the bottom, like this:

I like it! I may steal that Filtertron idea.
The only drawback to 3 or 4 screw is that they become less Mr. Potatohead-like with all the standard 2 screw pickups out there. But, that is also just a chance to sell an overpriced mod kit to turn a 2 screw humbucker into a 3 or 4 screw by bolting on a little bracket to the ears.

Yeah, that's the drawback. Another big ding is the fact that many guitar makers cut routs just large enough to accept a standard humbucker.
