I was asked to recommend a bass guitar to a singer, guitarist, sound man who wanted to move to bass. I told him Fender Precision is the standard all are compared to and beyond that it was all personal preference, my own personal preference a Ric 4001. He went with a precision and was very happy with it. What say you? .

Now, I haven't tried every bass out there, but still lean heavily toward a precision. It's basic, it works with all kinds of genres and it's the bass that has driven thousands of hits, thousands of gigs and thousands of garage bands.
I will admit that I also have big attraction to to the G&L L2000/2500. Coming in third is the Stingray. I've tried, but I have never really bonded with the jazz bass.

If I had to choose just one, I'd settle on a precision with a Jazz neck.

You can’t go wrong with a P-Bass, I purchased mine in 1981 after 17 years playing the old Framus Atlantik thinline, which I still have and occasionally use. That P-Special is one heavy chunk of wood. Now a days I mostly use the Guild Starfire.

I’m an old Pbass guy that loves a nice Ric , somehow I became a Danelectro guy . I’m not quite sure how it happened , but I’m ok with it .

Pbass. It thumps, like a heart beat. I prefer that to "growl."

A Precision seems to work well for everything.

My Ric 4001 is MY favorite. I also have a 91 American Jazz Bass but a P bass is the bomb. I had a 57 once that got stolen.

P-Bass...or in my case the MIJ Jazz Bass Special, which is just a P-Bass without a pickguard and a P-J pickup set. Do I ever use the J pickup?...NOPE!!! I tried a friend's Ric ages ago, but the sound was too mid-rangey and the ergonomics were odd (hard binding on the arm, and pickup cover was where I normally liked to place my hand!).

I have a really nice Lakland P-Bass clone. It's a sweetie. I also have a little Gretsch Junior Jet bass (version 1), and that's the one that stays out because I'm a guitar player first and a bass player...never It's a lot easier for me to play than the long-scale Lakland. The Jet is a short-scale bass; I stuck some huge Pyramid flats on it, and it sounds gi-normous. Here it is next to a Les Paul.

I kind of stick with one bass for a long period of time. I have a Fender P bass that was the only axe I owned and played for around ten years until going back to a ‘63 J bass. I’ve owned that P bass for 56 years now. The J bass was the only bass I played for the next fifteen years until I switched to a Stingray 5 that became the main axe for the next ten years. In ‘99 I switched to my 55-94 Lakland and that has been the main bass since. Of the fivers the Lakland would be my fav as it has a string spacing at the bridge that is closer to the feel of a Fender four string where the Stingray has a slightly narrower string spacing at the bridge.

While I like my my Player series P bass I gravitate toward my American Pro Jazz Bass with S-1 switch that gets me into the realm of a P Bass. I strung it with Thomastik Infield Jazz flats and my Gretsch Hollow body bass with DR pressure wounds. If I had to pick from my 4 and 5 string basses It would be very hard to let go of the Fender American Pro and my Gretsch as the Fender is most versatile and Gretsch most unique tone and fun to play.

The neck on my P bass is like a 2X4 compared to my J basses. In past P basses felt same to me as you stated, however my player series while wider than my J it is narrower front to back making it nicer to play but not quite that “ahhh feel “ of my Jazz neck

I installed a series/parallel switch on my J bass which gives it more thump. I did the same thing with my P/J. The P and J pickups running in series is a powerful configuration.

In thinking about my favorite bass it brought to mind that bass I owned that I thought was my least favorite.
Back in the ‘80s, through some wheelin’ an’ dealin’, I picked up an original Gibson Thunderbird bass. I played it once or twice on gigs and found I got really sick of holding the neck of the bass up while trying to play it; it was very headstock heavy. I ended up using it as a gag prop if we’d play stuff like Devo tunes and ended up trading it for a new Laney 2-12 amp (sort of their version of a Fender Twin) that I traded to another dealer for a new Marshall combo for my son.

All hail the Azureglo! But what is up with that bridge? I have never seen it before. You do. And if you are into that type of sound, a Tech 21 Geddy Lee preamp pedal works wonders when paired with it.
