If you're not into funk and soul you might not recognize the name Al McKay, but you've heard him. He was a long-time guitarist in Earth, Wind and Fire.
In 1975 the band was going nowhere and got recruited to be central characters in the low-budget film That's the Way of the World. Maurice White, EWF's leader, knew the movie would be a flop, so he shrewdly released the music as an album--not a soundtrack--before the movie was released. BAM they were instantly huge. The single, Shining Star, won them a Grammy.
McKay came from a jazz background and holy shmoly he could *burn*. Not only is his funk rhythm really poppin' on the track...check out his solo that begins at the one minute mark. Whoooo! Grab the fire extinguisher!

Oh yeah. There really is no EWF tune I dislike.
WHAT a band.

I have that LP which I bought when it was first released. Just played it again over the weekend. "That's the Way of the World" is my favorite song of theirs.
