For the money, it's tough to beat a Rumble 500C, or 200C for that matter.

Hushnel , those old GK MB150s are nice little rigs . I bought mine for upright but it quickly became my rehearsal , studio , practise amp . I managed to blow it up , and the repair took forever , and was expensive . But I loved that amp , and it was worth the repair . It was a sad day when they discontinued them . I also use a little MB 200 as another practise head . Usually into a Phil Jones C2 cab . The cab will not cover gigs but is nice and rich at my practise volume (pretty quiet)

A year or so ago I picked up the Phill Jones double four, I got a smart battery for it. I use it with my ABG in acoustic venues. 70 watts into the 4 inch speakers. It Sounds really good, I’ve been sitting in with a lot of acoustic folk/country circles. I put it under my chair and use a wireless connection. It’s surprising how most don’t know I’m amplified. I haven’t tried it out in a coffee house type gig but I think it would pull it off.

I would like opinions on the Fender Rumble series. I note they come as 100w, 200w and 500w configurations. It appears there are economies of scale. The questions is whether the jump in power and price make sense. I am thinking I would like something that can bridge from coffee house gigs to something a little heftier in a electric guitar power rock situation.

Have a rumble 500 2 x 10 combo.
Have used in small medium pub gigs with the blues band, without having to worry about the volume.
Everybody says it sounds good.
Light enough for a one handed carry.
It is really 350W but will put out 500w if used with an extension cab.

Thanks for the helpful comments. As a follow up I pulled the trigger on the 500w. I needed something quick and hence my question. On the way to rehearsal I stopped by my local GC. They had a couple 200w and only an open box 500w which they discounted to $500. So I basically got the 500w for the same price as a 200w. I straight from GC to the rehearsal studio and was immediately happy with the sound. I think the 200w is probably nice but I tend to default to more power than needed just in case.

I’m gonna need a very small practice type amp. It’s not really going to get used often at all, and I haven’t played out in about 25 years so I’m not going to be joining a band any time soon. Something that sounds decent and is as cheap as possible is all I need.
Whatcha got??

They went up! They used to be $99.
I’m sure the 15 is groovy too.

So I had this experience. For some reason I am getting a lot of requests to sit in as a bass player to support other acoustic duets at local open mics. I think most folks who show up at the 3 songs open mic deals just want to do their songs and don't plan ahead for bass or percussion. So another guy who plays the Cajon and I seem to get requests.
Problem is my 500w is too big for that. But plugging into a board is not always an option when they are running a small board and maybe a 10' PA. Even an electric/acoustic bass may blow one of those speakers.
So as much as I love my 500w I think I will be back in the market for a really portable small bass amp like the 25 or 40w.

I know 100% I’m not going to be asked to play anywhere. I have no local friends who are musicians and it has never happened to me. A 500w amp would be worth it for annoying my neighbors, but the odds of my ever needing more than a practice amp are nil.
Knowing myself, whatever amp I get will be largely unused anyway.

It’s wonderful to have headroom . And you never know when you might be setting up outdoors , and seriously needing a little more power . My gig heads are 900 watts and 700 watts at 4ohms . Never have turned them all the way up , but I have a clean sound at whatever volume I use , with a xxxx ton of headroom . It’s nice to have .

Well it's not like RHCP texted me to sub because Flea is under the weather.
I have been in a couple local bands recently and it seems to me the most difficult part is finding bass players. Guitar players and drummers are everywhere. But if I switch to bass I get a lot more opportunities to play because not much rehearsal is needed and can actually get by just knowing the root and sticking with simple lines.
At the open mics if I show up with a bass and they know I already am familiar with their material someone will invite me to sit in. I find that a whole lot more enjoyable than sitting there for a hour or two just to play 3 songs.
With us seeing the backside of Covid it does appear the live music scene is slowly coming back.

I picked up a Rumble 15 and didn’t like it at all . Tell me more. Especially what you replaced it with. We were spending a lot of time looking after my mother-in-law , and I was given a corner to set up a little man cave/practice nook . I generally was doing a fair number of gigs , so I liked to keep the practice amp completely separate . I had been using a classic little GK MB150 for years at home . A great little amp . I thought I just needed something small so I picked up the Rumble 15 , and it was awful . And I realized I was used to hearing good tone . So I picked up a little GK MB200 and a Traynor 212 . Replaced the cab with an Ampeg 210AV ... better , replaced that with a Phil Jones C2 . Perfect ! The MB200 is great , and can be used with headphones , also has an aux in so I can plug in a tablet . Nice silent practice . The Phil Jones C2 is perfect for home practice but would not cut it for gigs . I recently picked up a little Hotone Thunderbass amp for fun , and have been using it with headphones and a tablet .
... and Herself thinks the little red cab is funky . Win ! I paid too much for it , but I use it every day . Guilty pleasure .

Definitely not the kind of thing I am looking for, I just need a little amp to pull out on occasion.
Anyone have a suggestion for a smallish 8” speaker type other than a Rumble?

For low volume occasional home use, a guitar amp would be fine. Years ago, I used a $50 Kustom guitar amp to jam with an acoustic guitarist... light weight, made a listenable sound, and the overdrive was a bonus. Even the Vox battery powered bass headphone amps are decent for private listening.

For noodling something like this works. I have one. Runs on batteries, and weighs about a pound. Great to use on the patio. blackstaramps.com/uk/ranges/fly-bassOr if this bass thing is as casual as you say, just use your guitar amp (I assume you have one) and keep the volume down. Have fun!

For all you’re going to use it for, Mike, looking cool is important.
Being somewhat serious.
I had a Rumble 25 and it was fine for me. I’m not really a bass player any ways. But I wanted more bass amp so I bought the Peavey I mentioned earlier in this thread. It’s great around the house but I could take it out, too - not that this would actually happen.

I picked up a Rumble 15, I tried to make it better with a better speaker, I tried it, still don’t like it and haven’t used it since.
The Rumble 40 was a whole other deal. I really like the way it sounds. I use in the living room practically every day.
Not cheap but the Phil Jones Double 4 is small and can be run with a battery, and sounds amazing. I’ve been using it with my acoustic guitar too.
