.... I'm asking for a friend.
Seriously though, I was clicking through something on Reddit and there was discussion of some ethnic/national specific dating websites that seemed very much like the old idea of a mail order bride. Young women who want to get out of a poor country, lonely old men willing to finance, and hopefully something else good along the way. Sounds creepy and weird, but it seems like all parties involved are sincere, so.... *shrug*
It occurred to me that I've always heard of mail order brides, heard songs about them, seen it on TV, but never actually heard first hand about any of it. I have heard of men going overseas for work or military and coming back with a lady, I can think of several I've known to have done that, but the whole mail order thing... no first hand stories.

I dunno, some of those pacific rim women are rather petite. A large bubble mailer would probably do the trick.

A guy where I used to work "imported" a Russian bride. She used him to get into the USA, burned him for a bunch of money and then left him.
In all fairness to her, he was jerk and an idiot: taking advantage of him couldn't have been all that hard and certainly wasn't completely unjustifiable.

A civilian worker at my last patrol station, had a side business going of linking up men with Russian brides. An odd duck was he.

A guy I worked with several years ago went on vacation that a travel agent guaranteed would be "12 dates in 10 days" in Russia. Came back with more stories, and more pictures of beautiful Russian women just dying to get out of the country. All were gorgeous, most were professional women. Could have gotten married 8 times, as he said. Went with one woman for a couple of years, as it were, but wound up marrying a super-wealthy woman from South America. The man had goals...

My boss went on a trip like that once, and wound up staying in Russia for 6 months. I can’t even imagine the amount of women he “pursued” and the promises he made. The friend he went with (who stayed 2 weeks as planned) did bring a bride home, they are still married but living separately, and she forced herself in as the office manager of his medical practice. He pays for her separate house (where his mother in law also now lives), and she controls all of his finances, both personal and business. According to him, it’s totally worth it and an ideal situation. But she probably makes him say that.

I know a similar situation. Just sub in Ukrainian woman and son. My story had an ending. He died and she and her son got everything. The biological kids weren’t even invited to the funeral.

A friend of mine imported several girls, looking for a wife. After a month or three he'd send'em back.
Three years ago he imported a cute Asian girl (he has a "thing" for Asian girls). They married two years ago - she's 20+ years younger than him.. She's a nice kid in her 20's... ..still together (as far as I know).

According to the internet, there are lots of hot singles in my area looking to meet me.
If I was unmarried, I'd probably just go that route.

Similarities to looking for a bride at the bar. Minus the non-citizen aspect.
I might add: I met Queenie at a bar. Neither were looking for a spouse at the time.

I heard a story once of a mail order husband, the wife was a famous, (well famous now) actress who went to England and found a sucker living in a little hovel called Buckingham something or other. Long story short she tricked him into coming to Canada then eventually America, all the time crying about how unhappy she was.
She so alienated everyone that when his grandfather passed, she was not even at the funeral.

One guy who was the ultimate blowhard computer geek with too much income and health issues, who probably couldn't buy a date in the USA, DID manage to find and persuade a Russian woman to marry him. She had a plan. And to finalize it, she got pregnant. After 5 years and with USA citizenship, she files for divorce and spousal support for herself and child...up to an including quite expensive private schools and college. The computer nerd, having fallen in love with the child as the only person who loves him(daughter), and nearing the end of his life, sets her up as his heir. The ex-wife is now 2,000 miles away in the USA in a nice zip code as a USA citizen, the daughter is in the final year of a high priced college where she is no doubt primed and ready to find her own...sucker, and the guy adores his daughter and got loved for once in his life...or so he thinks so...and that's the same thing really, perception is reality ! . Win, win, win ?

I recall jokingly looking at prospects in the “Cherry Blossoms” magazines a coworker brought to work. I understand, through the grapevine, he finally brought one to the US but it didn’t work out. I have no details.

A childhood friend's mother passed away when he was only 5. His father brought in a string of brides from the old country and each "relationship" ended as one might guess. I think he was looking more for a mother for his 2 kids more than a bride for himself.

I had a customer in his mid 50's bring one in from Russia a number of years ago. She was in her mid 20's and total a knockout. It lasted about 2 months before he sent her back. He told me she was a slob and didn't want to do anything but drink and watch TV. She did nothing to help out around the house. He didn't have a big enough bankroll for her to be 100% dependent. He had adult kids for that.

That's a concept that does not interest me at all. I suspect the vast majority are scammers and it would most likely end poorly.

I also like how how he "rhymed" "when you're down on your luck / you just need someone to... touch."

I worked with someone who was not bashful about broadcasting that he went to Russia for the purpose of coming home with a bride. He came home alone...I hadn't ever considered that as a possibility. Pretty weird all around.
