I had a Behringer mixer listed on Ebay that sold today. I look at my email and there's a message in there wanting to know if I can wait until Sunday to get paid. WHAT?? What kind of doofus wins the auction with the high bid and doesan't have the money to pay for it? He outbid the next highest bidder by $2. Whoopty doo. I told him I would wait until Sunday the 25th but no longer. I'm offering it to the next highest bidder on Monday.
What's WRONG with people these days. Is everyone under the age of 40 a complete moron? I'm beginning to think so. It slaps me in the face each and every day.

I have been getting a lot of that lately. The kicker is when they don’t even message you and you have to chase them down to find out they are paying you in a week lol.

So...then...the auction wasn't supposed to be for the privilege of putting your mixer on Xmas layaway?

I had someone do it with a $20 item. If you can’t pay $20 for a week, you shouldn’t be using eBay.

I mean, this is America and it’s 2021, people buy all kinds of crap they can’t afford all the time. But even those people don’t take a week to pay, they just use a credit card!! I have found an item on eBay that I didn’t quite have the money set aside for, but then I put it on the credit card and pay for it on payday. I don’t expect the seller to wait for payday.

I guess I've not participated in the bidding part of Ebay but once. Won the auction, paid within minutes. Isn't there a way to stipulate in advance a timeframe for payment?

I also always pay immediately. Not only is it the right thing to do, it's just easier that way: it's done and you don't have to worry about maybe forgetting to do it later.

EBay’s standard is payment within 48 hours. If they don’t do it, though, you have to report it and then wait a week before you can cancel. Then you have to go through re-selling. If the buyer says they’ll pay you within a week, and they actually do it, sometimes you are better off waiting.

Ebay buyers, don't get me started
I sold a golf club on ebay and after the auction ended the buyer contacted me to see if i could drop it off in Sydney now that's roughly an hour each away if all the stars align, add traffic because they live in the worst part (it's all bad) and it turns into a 3 and a half to 4hour round trip nightmare if your lucky. all this for an item that went sold $80,
so i replied simply with a No!
he then asked if he could pick it up and pay for it then, now my reply got a bit longer
It was along the lines of
Did i say anywhere in my auction that i would personally deliver the item or that pick up was an option? No!
Why I don't have enough time in the day to fart arsed around travel or wait for some moron to turn up because people like you are never on time! Then you try and haggle me down on something that was a fair and reasonable price to begin , Mt time is precious to me and i don't want to deal with (insert disparaging remark here) like you, So your option is pay for the item and i will ship it or don't
needless he didn't pay for the item

Maybe for some folks, it's not about getting the item, it's about winning the bidding? As with people who buy stuff they don't need or want and then rent a shed to store it in. It's the purchase that gets them off, rather than having the item.

I'm in the "pay right away" crowd. I bought it, I want to get it paid for in the hopes that it will ship that much more quickly. What I hate is paying minutes after I win and then having them sit on it a week before they ship it.

I remember once going to a live auction with my dad, and there was a whole box of 1975 Topps baseball cards, the year with the George Brett and Robin Yount rookie cards, worth hundreds of dollars each at the time. We were allowed to sort through and there were at least 10 of each. I hoped, being a primarily antiques auction, that nobody would be interested and I would score a huge deal. I probably had $200 available and I was prepared to go all in. The bidding was up to $500 in seconds, and finished over $1,000. I was very unhappy.

As a buyer, I have this rant against sellers: I have never had a seller answer a question about an item prior to buying it. Sometimes the listing is vague, sometimes I have specific questions, whatever. But whenever I contact them, I never hear back. Why don't sellers ever answer questions about their listings?

On Monday I had somebody ask me if the item that is an "Active Listing" was still for sale. Granted they did also ask about taxes, but still! Oh, and they said they will buy it 'next week when they get some checks in', so I am skeptical!

I had that guy’s alter ego, who contacted me immediately after I accepted someone else’s Best Offer to ask if it was still available (it wasn’t) and that he was waiting until he got home to buy it at my full asking price.
Sure, you wanted it that bad but you couldn’t buy it until you got home, despite having found it when clearly you were not home and you could have bought it with the click of a button.
Guy was obviously trying to get me to cancel out on the guy who bought it and was willing to pay more to get me to do so, but nope, I don’t do that.
I did tell the buyer that I refused that guy’s advances, and told him if he ever wanted to sell, I know where he could make another $50 immediately.

I’m so glad I don’t sell on eBay any more. I don't do it as often as I used to but I have some gear I need to get rid of. As I said in another post, "I never use it and tired of it being in my way." I sold a couple things on Reverb. Ebay and Reverb are different beasts. It seems to me that things sell quicker on Ebay generally. There is a time limit with them where there isn't on Reverb. I also think that Reverb tends to attract more musicians and we all know about how broke musicians usually are.

I haven’t had any shenanigans on Reverb. It was the shenanigans that chased me off of eBay several years ago.

only if you want there to be, you can adjust how long you're auction runs on the bay.

Well, Sunday has come and gone and the jerk isn't going to pay for the item. He said his mom got sick and he wasn't going to buy it. I don't want to sound heartless but that's not my problem. I opened an unpaid item case so now I have to wait 5 days before I can sell it. It's now too late to offer it to the next highest bidder. Man, that burns me up. I went to leave negative feedback and that isn't an option. That could be the last time I sell anything on Ebay. I have 100% positive feedback and have sold on there since 2005. Not anymore unless they can pull a rabbit out of the hat for me. I'm pi$$ed.

It happens. Just list it again and try again. I have had that exact situation and the second time, sold it for more money than the bidder who didn’t pay won it at.
In my experience (I have been selling on eBay since 1998), these incidents, while frustrating, are few and far between enough that it’s still worth it.
But, don’t forget to add that joker to your blocked bidder list so you don’t have to worry about him (or his mom) anymore.

Reason #249 I don't sell on eBay anymore.
I'm still a buyer, on average I buy a couple things a month on the Bay. But selling? All I ever sold was music gear anyways, so I use Reverb exclusively now.

I sell on eBay a lot. A LOT. I almost never have that problem, probably 10 times total. All part of the process.
That’ll be coming to an end, however, as starting next year, $600 or more and you get a 1099. If I sell old things I have around my house, there shouldn’t be tax consequences.
EDIT: That’s for all online selling platforms that process payments via credit card or other electronic means.
