I’ve been thinking of building a couple thumb pianos, maybe even coming up with a type of wind chime. I’ve looked on line and figure just about any good hard tool/knife steel would work, the hardening would have to be tweaked toward a bit softer in the tempering. I like the looks of all hand wrought tines. I’ve got a bunch of gourds, dried and ready for projects. I have a couple huge abalone shells that might work with a thinned and braced wood top. The more primitive the look with great intonation and projection, the better.
I had an idea a few years back to make a wind chime that was calibrated to a four note chord, so that a low wind, like 5 mph the first bass note would sound when the wind got up to 10 mph the second note of the chord would sound, at 15 the third at 20 the octave with the full chord sounding. This would be a flute type sound rather than percussion. Wind direction would require the device could move so the air flow would be correct to sound the tube(s) and possibly a kind of scoop on the tubes to finesse the direction for a nice solid note. Along the line of a pipe organ. A cool Anemometer. It may not be possible. If I can get a single note to work, then I should be able to finesse the others as well.
Social distancing is taking it’s toll “o)

I've made kalimbas using steel tines that break off from street sweeper machines. If you have a contact that works in the local road & bridge, you have an inside track.
There's some fine kalimba content (and plenty of other cool stuff) here in this documentary of the medieval festival at Visby on Gottland Island, Sweden.

Telecaster Thumb Piano
I did okay buying a garden rake at Home Depot. The tines are of enough quality to resonate without bending. I used a number of bone saddles over a length piezo cable and an acoustic guitar preamp. If I ever come across a modern Gibson Les Paul with a broken neck I will do this again because I am looking for a seat at the guitar gods table as the token idiot who can’t play but has great dumb ideas just so I can hang out.

Yeah those leaf rakes would suit the project nicely. I think I saw that in a previous thread a year or so ago. Forging the tines would be relatively easy, tweaking and adjusting the temper and drawing could get a bit tedious.
thanks for the link Geno.

I remember that rake Tele! I think I mentioned Gene Chadbourne's Electric Rake and asked if it was an inspiration to you for that build.
