I became interested in Vincent Van Gogh recently. I'm posting this because I thought a few of you might enjoy the same little trip I took. First off I've seen his works before, and really like them. I went as far as to order a set of Vincent Van Gogh drink coasters which feature some of his works.
I love his works, especially his Self-portraits. I always wonder what he's thinking with his expressions.
So if you decide to take this little journey, I recommend you first read a bit at the wiki link to familiarize yourself with the basics of what we know about him. Then take a little time clicking on some of the wiki photos of his works.
Then lastly, you may want to watch a movie called At Eternity's Gate. The movie is named after one of his paintings. A painting of an old man in a chair.
Vincent Van Gogh's At Eternity's Gate painting. The movie At Eternity's Gate stars Willem Dafoe who portrays Vincent. Willem looks a 'lot' like Vincent. Not a bad movie if you're interested in the subject. It's not The Shawshank Redemption, or full of plot twists etc. It's a simple poetic movie. It's a bit slow, and dry, but interesting. Willem Dafoe is great of course.
It's a look into his life during a specific time when he was painting a lot, and mastered the style he's most know for. He is sort of the classic tortured artist, who wasn't appreciated until after his death. There is debate over how he actually died.
He had trouble selling his art while he was alive. Now his works go for 10s of millions of dollars. One sold in 2016 for 66 million dollars.
Here is what Wiki has on Vincent Van Gogh:
Here is IMDB's link to At Eternity's Gate the movie.
If you want to watch the movie, it's out there. I believe prime has it if you have the showtime upgrade. It will be on Showtime Mon, Jan 27 2:00 AM SHOW (579) Mon, Jan 27 5:00 AM SHOW (094) Mon, Jan 27 8:10 AM SHO2 (580)

A big fan here. Went to the museum in Amsterdam last fall and have a couple prints of his works on my walls If you want a really cool movie try Loving Vincent. You know how they put animation over film for some movies? Well they hand painted in the style of Van Gogh every frame and it makes the painting come alive. Its a story of his death which they speculate may not have been suicide. See it for the moving art and stay for the story.

I'm a huge fan; I've read several books about his life and the influence he's had on subsequent artists and styles. I haven't seen the movie yet.
I've traveled the world many times and have seen a lot of things, and when taking in a landscape, or the heavens, or something small like a flower or a leaf, I'll sometimes think (or even exclaim), "that looks like a Van Gogh." It really comes out of nowhere and it surprises me when it occurs.
If that's not a testament to his artistic vision and interpretation, I dunno what is. Life imitates art!

I bet that was really awesome going to the museum. Wow!
Peegoo, I like your story! Good stuff, and it speaks to how big of an impact his paintings had on you.

And the animators did an unreal job. I couldn’t believe how great it was.

big, big fan. I saw 2 major shows over the years in NY and Philly. you just have to see them in person, all the brush strokes are incredible. you leave a show literally blown away, at least I was. would love to go to Amsterdam, maybe one day. my pop's 92 and been an artist his whole life and adores him, matter of fact he may be the world's biggest fan, knows everything and anything about him. when we were at a show and close up to the paintings, he point out a few spots along the edges where there was no paint, only canvas. my dad said he painted so fast and leaned them up against each other when still wet and the paint sometimes pulled off onto the other painting, fascinating!
I'm sure most here have seen it but Kirk Douglas was a tour de force in "Lust For Life" in 1956

I always loved Van Gogh. I used to sit in the library at school and read through books of his work. I was always fond of his work in Arles. I also learned recently of his love of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, and how artists like Ando Hiroshige influenced him, which he called Japonaiserie
