You can buy a used trumpet or clarinet, because the air only goes one way. And they get, or should get, cleaned out every now and then.
But harmonicas? Put me with the ewwww group.

I just sold 10 harps dating to the early 90s.
Golden Melodies, Special 20s, Busch, Lee Oscar.. barely used, all sanitized.. all in excellent plus condition for $125.. the entire bunch.
I kept my 2 professional harmonicas.. 16 Hole Hohner Chromatics.. "Gardnerized".

I have 2 of these: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/64Chromonica--hohner-the-64-chromonica. Mine are older with better reeds. One is a 280 the other is an "Adler" 280. Both "Gardnerized". Completely torn down and the equivalent of "blue printed", "balanced" and "ported" . New windsavers (valves), everything flattened and polished, reeds adjusted and gapped and tuned to perfection. Dick Gardner was the last of the HARMONICATS and a world renowned Chromatic harmonica player, tech and tuner. He did Toots and Stevie Wonder's harmonicas as well as those of many other pro players.

two years ago, I wanted (no, NEEDED) to play a Hohner Chrometta 12 harmonica. I got this serious sentimental yearning for the harmonica I played in high school- chromatic, red plastic body. Only 12 holes, and ROUND edges, so easily cuppable in my hands. I remember it having a nice warmth to its tone
Wasn't going to pay $150 for a sentimental luxury, but there was a used one on Ebay for $30. So I went through the ew-eck-gack-wince motions, but then pulled the trigger.
I soaked it for two days in alcohol based mouthwash. I took it apart and lightly scrubbed every reachable surface. Dried it out, put it to lips, and played my best Love Me Do.
Nice....

Chrometta 12s and 10Ss have roughly the same shape and color as the diatonic Golden Melody.
I just offed a Chrometta 10 I bought new from Abinante's Music on Alvarado in Monterey, Calif. around 1968. Never played it. With the original Price tag of $19.95 and in the original case.

I once sold a microphone on Reverb and made sure to specify it was "used only in a home studio free of cigarette smoke and halitosis".
It sold pretty fast.

Nice.... Gotta have a chromatic harmonica for "Love Me Do." The "Someone to love, somebody new" part can't be played properly on a non-chromatic harmonica.

Just bought another mint condition Gardnerized Hohner 280 and a CX 12 in C also Gardnerized.
I knew the owner.. Never played either. RIP Orville Clay.
I paid $49 for the pair.

I once sold a microphone on Reverb and made sure to specify it was "used only in a home studio free of cigarette smoke and halitosis". I once auditioned for a band, the lead singer of which made a big show of periodically farting on his mics during rehearsal in hopes that this would discouraging others from borrowing or stealing them. I'm not sure that there were any real winners in that situation...
I wouldn't play somebody else's harmonica.
Unless, of course, that somebody was a person I'd previously French kissed...
