That pedal where you thought meh? Had little or no expectations. Low price point but big in utility. A pedal that you unexpectedly found you use a lot above others.
Mine: a $ 79 Ibanez Mini TS.
Dialed in as a semi transparent boost.. Combined with the guitar’s controls... I use more than any pedal on my board.
When I started using it when playing Jazz...(very warm Jazz tones when the volume and tone is rolled back)
That’s when I thought for $79... dang I get my $$ worth...

Nice story, pc. I have a hard time with pedal. I love them when other people, but I can never get my around them. I think I should just invest the time.

Funny - same here. TS mini is the one OD pedal on my board. Always thought it (the old one) was the perfect fit in front of my Super Reverb but not with the JTM. Surprise..

Bought a used Nux Cerberus "fly rig" type mult effects pedal a month or so ago for £80. It has replaced my entire pedal board including FDII, OCD, Crunchbox and Bogner Blue. And a couple of cheap mod pedals. We had a rehearsal last night and our other guitarist remarked how good the Nux sounded. The cost of the pedals it has replaced must be £500 - £600, not to mention the £300 dual drive pedal that I've just bought and have only taken out of its box once, as it's no better (to me) than the Cerberus. First gig coming up next Friday, so we will see whether it cuts it in a live setting

I have a NuX Monterey Vibe (Uni-Vibe) that I love. it's a little dark sounding but then again the vintage units were too if you plugged guitar straight in to them. And I have a Mooer Green Mile TS clone which is virtually identical tone to my TS9DX but with such a small footprint it's now not only on my board but I love it!
And I picked up both of those pedals used for 30 bucks!

This one. No controls to go all wonky, and true bypass! Heh heh. ..

That's hilarious, Peegoo!
As far as the original question, the first thing to pop into my head was the Ibanez TS-7 with the "hot" mode switch engaged.
That became my go-to sound for a long time. I think I ended up having 4-5 of them over the last two decades or so. Very useful for the bands I've been in.

Bass rig surprise pedal was a cheapo Eden pre-amp substitute for a noisy WT 550. Not the same but close enough. Also the only pedal besides a MB compressor with the bass.

MXR Custom Shop Il Torino. I saw one for half price, checked out the reviews and was surprised this pedal isn't much better known. I bought one and it's stayed on my board for a long time now, covering low to medium overdrive territory, which I think is the hardest to get right. It has three eq controls, two levels of boost and both gain and master controls, so you can treat it as an extra amp channel. It would work equally well for some folks switched on full-time. tonereport.com/reviews/mxr-il-torino-overdrive

but wound up spending too much time tweaking the settings, especially when I switched from one bass to another. Just running through the compressor and 10-band EQ make things much simpler and has me spending more time playing and less time twiddling knobs. I'm not big into distortion or other effects, so I can get what I want with less effort that way.

Same as other posters above. Ibanez TS mini. But I can't say it was 'unexpected'. I had the full sized version for many years and assumed the 'mini' would be the same but in a smaller footprint. I haven't a/b'd it but I think it sounds right. I do swap and rotate my OD pedals but the Ibanez is a fairly constant staple. It's pretty simple to dial in what you want and there is nothing harsh about it.

I'll be the odd man here. A Maxon PH-350 Roto-Phaser.
I surely don't use it much but it's the perfect phaser. I especially like the negative feedback.

I've never been much of a pedal guy and an OCD was the only boost I've ever owned until recently picking up a Duncan Twin Tube Classic. That thing is pretty nice. The heavier of the two channels is a bit harsh for me but I don't need a ton of overdrive anyway. The other channel gets real nice classic rock/marshally tones.

Marshall Bluesbreaker II. Worth every cent of the $20 I paid for it used.
And then some.

A Nobels ODR-1. I purchased it in 1999 for $28. I sold it last month for $650. Unexpected and kinda magical.

I'd say the Soul Food. Cheap, but effective. I also like the Boss Terra Echo in small doses, but have to explore Afterneath again

I got an Eno AE1 Ambient Echo that I use quite a bit. It's a nice short delay that will do slap back.

Both of these seem to be the holy grails for Nashville players and studio players. Crazy what they are running nowadays. I bought my MT-10 last year, and it's nearly doubled in value since.

The Korg Toneworks Super Multieffects unit from the mid 1990s. Guitar Player’s review gushed over the other three pedals in the series but panned it as IIRC “more complex to control than the space shuttle.”
I got my first one as a $49 Guitar Center close out and have been snatching them up ever since as they sound great (well, good enough for my gig bag and radio remotes) are easy to dial up, and run on batteries. If it had a tuner it’d be perfect.
Plus it has the best octave fuzz I’ve ever heard.

I don’t think I ever compared it to anything. It was on my board for a week or two. I wanted to simplify things and bought a Yamaha DG Stomp to replace the other pedals. The Nobels went back in its box and snoozed in my basement for 20 years. The DG soon joined it. I recently read about the Nobels being the current darling in Nashville. I threw it on Reverb and it sold in a few hours. I believe one sold for $850 recently. Hoping Nashville discovers the magic of the DG. Prices are up on everything. I recently sold 2 guitars for close to $200 more than I paid for them a few years ago. They were common and nothing special.

I bought my first Boss BD-2 decades ago. I wouldn't say that I had low expectations but I never expected it to be my 'always on' pedal for 25 years. I did upgrade to the Keeley version many moons ago and it's still on my board.
