I just got done doing something I was curious about when it comes to recording an amp, positioning the mic in some basic positions and taking notes about it putting down as much info as I could come up with and then, coming to this forum and putting down my findings and offering it as sort of a template for others to exam. Then I realized, of course..., there's more to it than that. I made separate recording snippets for each placement, all, the same 'riff' which are not included in this post. Anyway, here's what I came up with for only one aspect among thousands of combinations that could be done:
Hardware and Software used:
2 Shure SM57 mics w/2 Shure X2U interfaces plugged into desktop USB's
Fender Twin Reverb, Sweetwater Limited Edition w/Celestion Cremebacks G 12 NEO'S
Fender Tele Players edition and Xvive wireless system
Sonar X2 Studio for recording
Simple guitar recording track comparisons for different microphone placements
Middle pickup setting on Tele w/volume and tone set to mid range
Amp settings: Volume just before 5, Treble @ 8, Middle @ 5, Bass @ 5 using Reverb @ 4
X2U interface settings for gain are maxed for single mic and 'tuned' for equal gain when using both Mics together
All recording track settings are set @ default settings
Recording #1: Single Mic placed @ center of speaker
Recording #2: Single Mic placed @ middle between center of speaker and edge
Recording #3: Single Mic placed @ edge of speaker
Recodinng#4: Two Mic centered on each speaker using a recording track for each Mic
Recording #5: Two Mics @ middle between center and edge of speaker
Recording #6: Two Mics @ speaker edge
Adding a guitar for more testing. The Warmoth Strat will be recorded in the same scenario.
Pickup selector @ position 4, volume and tone @ mid range. Amp settings as before.
Recording #7: Two Mics @ speaker edge
Recording #8: Two Mics @ middle between center and edge of speaker
Recodinng#9: Two Mic centered on each speaker using a recording track for each Mic
Recording #10: Single Mic placed @ center of speaker
Recording #11: Single Mic placed @ middle between center of speaker and edge
Recording #12: Single Mic placed @ edge of speaker
This is only a basic example of doing mic placements and as I write this, I didn't put down that the mics where always placed up against the screen. There's way more combinations of mic placements than this and I've only provided a very...very small example.
