I've never understood the need for the spring. My Strat vibrato bar gets used and I've never felt there was any benefit to have the spring in there. But really, here's the most important question for all vibrato bars: Leave the bar on or take it off when putting the guitar back in the case or gig bag? The idea is that it keeps is from flopping around. I've had it whack my hand many times. Finally solved!

Funny, I've owned a few strats over the years (never got along with 'em) and had no idea that there was supposed to be a spring in there. That's why new Strats with the 'vintage reissue' bridge have that little orange paper sticker or adhesive aluminum foil over the arm hole. The sticker is designed to allow the buyer to lose the spring Exxxxactly. So dumb.

I always take the bars off, especially if it's going in a gig bag That's the problem. The spring immediately falls out. Problem solved!

Amazon sells a 12 pk of springs for $6.99 so that's plenty spares to have in your case if you lose one, but...... 1) A dab of vaseline on the spring will keep it from falling out! 2) Just keep the Vibrato bar installed when you put it in the case (just rotate it in a position where it comes closest to the body)... a little rebending the bar slightly may help, too. Spring can't fall out! 3) If you do prefer to remove the bar often, get a chrome 1/4" snap plug from Home Depot to cover the open hole. If you don't use the vibrato bar at all, the chrome snap plug gives a cleaner look to the bridge anyway! 4) Just do nothing and play on! .....just sayin'. No need for Rocket Science here....

OK, I buy a bunch of springs. Get ready to play a set, and it's fallen out. Now I gotta search my case for another tiny spring in a dark club. My solution is way better, and it never falls out.
1. Someone else said grease. I don't want to put any substance anywhere I don't have to. I can just see me getting ready to go on, getting out the talent bar, touching the threads, and getting grease or vaseline all over my fingers!
2. The bar comes out when it goes into the case. Not negotiable.
3. I don't want another part floating around that I can lose or have to look for.
4. I WAS doing nothing, and it was a pain in the hand!
It ISN'T rocket science. That's the point of my post. In my humble opinion, the little bit of sponge is a simple and elegant solution. Just yesterday, I dropped one drop of water in there so the sponge would expand a bit, and make the bar a bit tighter. Works great!

I know this is probably been talked to death on the old forum but was wondering about changing the block out on my American Standard Strat to a Callaham block. These have a pop in arm and certainly would eliminate the spring but would it also help sonically?
