(Since we've been talkin' Ginger or Maryanne/maple or rosewood again...
I'll listen to the Sammy Hagar era Van Halen stuff, but prefer Dave's vocals and on-stage antics.
As far as the VH songs featuring Hagar go, I'd have to say this is my fav:
I also like much of Roth's post-VH stuff with Vai and Sheehan and even some of his solo stuff after those guys split.
For example:
...and...
People tend to be either completely indifferent to or have a very strong opinion about all this.
Where do you fall?

I liked them both, but the nod goes to Dave

It's kind of hard to beat the first album. Definitely Dave. Especially if you don't have to look at him, he's kind of annoying.

I like them both about the same. A lot of good tunes from that band.

One thing that kinda automatically gives Dave a leg up is that the band, at the time he was in it, was young, hungry and less road-worn and their shtick was fresh and new.

Dave for sure. He became the band (much to the other's chagrin).

Dave by a mile.
The 2nd version of Van Halen with Sammy was like the Doobie Brothers with Tom Johnston gone and Michael McDonald fronting. Not that it was a bad thing--just very different.

We could also do "Michael or Wolfie", but that could get nasty...

I like them both also, but if I had to choose one, it would be Dave.
Obviously, Eddie's guitar tone was better in the Dave era, also.

Dave Lee Roth was best in Van Halen, and their first album was iconic, but for me the first Montrose album is one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Sammy's solo stuff was pretty good too, so .............I like them both, but Hagar for the win, just ;-)

Dave gets my nod.
Nothing against Sammy.. killer tunes were made w/ Van Halen, but they seemed corporate. We called the line up with Sammy "Van Journey"
Dave's Van Halen was a gutsy rock band from Southern California, Hungry, full of Bravado and played with intensity

DLR was the deal for me. But no disrespect for Sammy.
DLR’s A Little Ain’t Enough is a bittersweet album. It was Jason Becker’s first and only with DLR And by the time the recording was finished, Jason wasn’t well enough to tour. It was early in its recording that the ALS diagnosis was made.
Check out this demo of Yankee Rose. He was such a fluid amazing player

I would definitely give it to DLR. The band was raw and ready to take no prisoners. Although Sammy did a great job during his era, it was a completely different band. The Sammy era did launch them into the stratosphere with all their radio friendly hits.

My pleasure. Nothing but respect for Jason. He was such a monster player. He’s still a monster musician. There’s a great documentary on his life called, “Not Dead Yet”

Sammy. I can't stand DLR, what an idiot. Sammy seems to be a decent guy, a great musician, and I respect his business acumen. His auto-biography was a good read too. I've seen him post VH and he still puts on a great show.

I would go with DLR mainly because I was a fan of the original lineup as a "yoot" in high school.

Band name alert: Maryanne, Maple & Dave. Doesn't even have to be a trio.
