This video by Anthony Wellington is exactly the class that he had at Victor Wootens Bass Camp at the Wooten Woods property, just outside of Nashville. I attended a few years back.
I never bothered to learn the names of the modes but the patterns stuck. I’ve played by ear my whole life, I pretty much know the fingerboard but with this understanding of the modes I‘ve been able to figure out much more and quicker. All I need is to figure out the first pattern out of the three, working the second at the most three patterns out, I pretty much have all the notes that are available to me for any given tune. Add that to the class Victor had on “Their are no bad notes, just bad technique”. It becomes almost hard to screw up.
I auditioned for a band a few months back, the previous drummer and bass player quit to form a group that would do more bar gigs. I’ve known the bassist from south Florida for many years, he tells people I taught him how to be a better bassist. Anyhow I walked in cold, with out any idea of their set list. I had no problems playing the tunes. I overheard the guys as I was setting my volume and tone for the room and warming up, they were impressed, and later glad to have me. A big part of pulling this off was the confidence that I gained from the week with Victor and Crew. I’m a good bassist, I was told so by Anthony when he pulled me aside after one class. I introduced myself as being a ferrel bassist, Dave Welch said he never heard that before, I told him neither had I. Any how a week later I checked the Facebook group to see when rehearsal was and I had been banned from the page, the drummer called me, he had been banned to. He told me the other two guys came back. No loss. I was pretty ambivalent about the group.
This same drummer called me last week to see if i was available to get together with him and a guitar guy. Sure why not, I need to practice with others. Turned out to be a recording studio “Graffitti Bridge Studio”, I’m in. They want to get out a play a few venues now and then, not the bar scene. I’m good with that and being available for recording from time to time. The guitar player/recording engineer and owner is very happy with my playing, particularly that I wasn’t’ familiar with the tunes we were playing and pulling them off without a hitch.
