Can't find the thread where you asked if I had serviced any mic amps, so maybe the mods can put this where it belongs. I have serviced 5 McCurdy AU300s.These days, if you can find them they go for about 1500 per channel. All tube, Hammond transformers in and out. I replaced all the caps including 3 .47 goliath caps per channel and four old leak'omatic yellow Astron .05 uF caps per channel. Getting at the Astrons was challenging, pretty much had to disassemble the whole thing to get at them. I also built a new power supply for the rack.....that's enough snot for 24 9 pin tubes. There are no electrolytic caps in the signal chain. Have also done things like fix VU meters on some DBX 160VU comps, replace opamps, restored some Scully preamps laden with UTC transformers. Despite my successes, I don't really know what I am doing, that's why I often seek advice here. cheers Roly
PS....I lost track of the number of amps I have built somewhere after 30....that was about three years ago. It's a small pond up her so it's a good situation for me.

Hiya Roly, I inquired about what makes mic pre's so expensive in your "What's your best preamp" thread. Thanks for the insights. I was looking at the Daking Mic Pre IIT 2-channel Microphone Preamp which is $500 more expensive than their Daking Mic Pre II 2-channel Microphone Preamp. The only difference I see between the 2 is the use of Jensen Input/Output transformers, so I figure components is a big factor.

The quality of components is a BIG factor, transformers, opamps, stepped attenuators, etc. Then there's the time involved to design a good sounding circuit and the years of experience needed to get one to a level where one can design a good sounding mic amp. Then there's all the other stuff that must be accomplished before one can bring a product to market. Expensive tools are expensive because people care about what they are selling, and those people only want to deal with other people who care. I'm definitely in the "buyer who cares" camp. These days I can't afford to buy expensive gear so, I just don't shop. cheers
