I sold my old Minimoog a couple months ago for a hefty sum. I bought a custom neck for my Strat and a couple other things but still had some money left. Yesterday I bought a Neumann U87Ai microphone from eBay. I've always wanted a U87 and this one was at a reasonable price for one of those. It was still expensive. Buying that mic used up the rest of the money left over from selling the Minimoog.

A good investment, although that was probably not on your mind at the time.

Yes, it was a good investment. It will always be worth what I paid for it. I actually did consider that before committing to it. I have a number of pieces of gear that I could sell at any time and get all, or more, of the money I paid for them back. I could sell most of my guitars for more than what I spent on them. Then there's the microphones, mic preamps, Hammond organ, and Leslies. As for the other stuff, it would sell but not for what I have into them. I have already sold all but one of my hardware synths and the only reason I keep it is so I have an extra MIDI controller to trigger stuff inside the computer. The synth section of it is irrelevant.

Nice. I reckon I'll never get beyond my makeshift studio, which is fine. My next purchase will probably be a decent channel strip like the Daking Mic Pre One. There are so many interconnected considerations when thinking about upgrades, such as room treatment, better mics, etc. All the while I feel the skills succumbing to the indignities of aging, like range and pitch control, tinnitus, hand/nerve issues, etc.
All in all I'm happy to make music at this level. I imagine how dumbfounded I'd be having a glimpse 30 years into the future and seeing what technology afforded me today as a home recordist.
