and after being told by one of the guitar players and various other people in the past, that they couldn't hear the bass, after we did the sound check today and being told the sound levels were ok I gave the volume knob an extra tweek.
Afterwards everyone said they could hear the bass !

Cool, I haven’t played out for while, since Brownie died last year. I could be a little more active in finding a group, I just don’t have the patience to deal with frivolous band crap anymore. The last one was perfect, no attitudes, we all agreed on the music, they even learned tunes I’d like to cover, like “St. James’s Infirmary“, “We’ve Got to Get out of this Place” and “She’s not There”, just because the bass lines are cool. They even dropped “I’m Your Puppet” ‘cause I was calling it the “xxxx Whipped” song. Usually I leave it up to the vocalist to what songs get on the list. Most of the groups I’ve been in have been trios, this one was guitar, mandolin and bass. The group before that one, around six years ago, was 5 piece at rehearsals and 8 at the gigs, we didn’t rehearse with the horn section, I had zero input into song selection, which was fine, all great and not often covered blues/jazz tunes.
A little extra head room reserved at the instrument is always a good idea. Generally I play with the bass guitar volume around < 75%. Mostly I don’t do bass leads, occasionally I’ll fill spaces, if the song can handle it.

It's usually been the opposite over here. Rarely any complaints on bass not being heard. I like it loud so I crank it up.

I like it loud so I crank it up. I do too, but risk complaints about it being too loud. Can the bass REALLY ever be too loud?

“Can the bass REALLY ever be too loud?”
Yeah, we were playing one of the clubs near the Miami International Airport one evening. I was cranked, it was a loud 3 piece band. The sport trophies started falling off the shelves. Yeah too loud. Gratefully they didn't hit anybody.
