I had a very nonproductive musical day. I worked on a guitar solo for a song I'm recording for a guy and spent about 5 hours on just the solo. I never did come up with anything I liked. It was like I had completely lost it and I know better. I finally quit and put the guitar away. I can't remember the last time I came up with nothing after working that long on something. I hope it was just an 'off' day and the muse will return tomorrow. It's not like me to come up empty handed. I couldn't get into the zone no matter what I did. That NEVER happens to me. I may be slow but not useless. Jeeese!!! I hate this feeling.

Did you get your muse back and finish the project?

Listen to some music that you normally wouldn't listen to.
I do this when I'm in a musical rut. Unfamiliar/exotic/weird music usually kicks my creativity back in.

Similar but not the same I play some punk or funk, the simpler the better to reset. Usually works.
The stronger remedy is barreling down the valleys on the bike and whitewashing the musical synapses. That always works.
In between, classic chopping wood/fetching water or whatever's providing some distraction.

I finally figured out what the problem was. The backing guitar tracks I had done were just wrong. I redid all of the backing guitar tracks and after that the solo fell into my lap. This was the last song of the album project for my friend in Japan. It was the one I liked the least. After I got done it turned out to be one of my favorites. He sent me the final mixes for all the tracks yesterday. They sound good but definitely not how I would have set up the balances between the instruments.

You're a hard worker obviously. Great. 👍
... and right on time to prevent another ed. to add table soccer or shooting hoops with the crew if available... 🙂

When I realize I’m having a non-productive day in some sort of creative endeavor, I pull the plug. As I’ve gotten older I’m better at recognizing when that condition exists.
If I’m not in the zone, pressing on regardless is not going to turn out well.
My $.02

If I’m not in the zone, pressing on regardless is not going to turn out well. My $.02 I'm getting better at recognizing when it's not going to happen as well but, I almost never come up with absolutely nothing. If I work on something long enough I can almost always find something useable. That makes me beat on it longer than I probably should before hanging it up. I need to develop the 'bail out' skill so I don't waste so much time. My approach has always been, what if I were called into a commercial studio to perform and record the guitar tracks. I HAVE to come up with something or I don't get paid and I wasted their time. That cannot happen very often or I would go broke and probably be blacklisted for session dates. Recording tracks at home removes that situation but that's the way I feel I should attack it.

I've been stymied before only to realize my direction forth lies through some deconstruction of previously laid tracks. This is all fine and dandy when doing so only offends me. 🤣

He finally posted the finished tracks. This is the one I was having issues with. nuclearbird.bandcamp.com/track/the-revolving-doorJust thought I'd add that this is not the way I played it. He has done a lot of creative editing moving things around and stacking stuff on top of each other that didn't quite fit. Kind of makes me think that if I do another project for him I'm not going to put as much effort into it as I did this one if he's going to screw what I did all up anyway. What's the point?

Not sure how much your tracks were whacked, but I like your guitar. A lot. Seriously cool chops and creative parts.
The vocal is almost indecipherable to me, even trying to follow along with the lyrics, lol. The arrangement and production of music is very cool. The vocal and lyrics are...different.
You should do an instrumental guitar album.

I, too, liked the guitar a lot. Some of the time signature changes in the song seemed gratuitous. Not all, but some.
But yeah, a solo instrumental album from the guitarist would be awesomes. 😎

Thanks guys. This is the whole album. nuclearbird.bandcamp.com/album/tyrannical-megalomaniacI agree about the singer being hard to understand. The one thing I WILL say for him is that he is a better singer than my buddy. The guide vocal tracks that were on the original tracks I overdubbed to were really bad. This is a concept album of sorts that documents the lifespan of the British band Atomic Rooster. That's the band Carl Palmer was in before he joined ELP. I was not familiar with them before this project. I listened to some of their material before I started recording the guitar tracks just so I could get acquainted with them. All I can say is that there's a reason they didn't acquire international fame. There were good players in the band but I thought their material was very weak. As for doing a solo album, I have plans to do that at some point. I doubt it will be entirely instrumental. I like vocals too much.

Ahh, that brings some clarity to the lyrical content.

Hey that's pretty cool. I was thinking and my wife said it first, a little bit like early Genesis.
Outstanding guitar work as usual.

Man o man, that's some serious prog rawk! Pretty incredible production and performance. The tension in that descending refrain makes my head spin, but in a good way, lol. Kudos Ken, your skills are remarkable.
