I am going to put up a website to see if I can solicit some guitar playing and recording work. In these times I don't think anyone will take you seriously if you don't have your own website. I have no idea who to use for hosting or even what to do about putting a website together. I'm already on a few social media sites but don't frequent them very often. Looking for recommendations.

I don't have anything really to offer other than I presume there are a number of options, free and otherwise. If you have a particular domain name in mind you might check availability or lock into one through a service like Go Daddy.

We had a band website for many years, in the days before build your own support took off. Luckily we had a friend who was both good at IT and a semi-pro photographer. I learned to do basic maintenance and updating, by going into the source code to edit it.
Much more recently, I helped my wife create her own site for her new business and was very impressed with wix.com, though it was the only self-build option we tried. Two years in, it's still working fine. As you'd expect, there are some recurring costs in addition to the basic domain and hosting, but I see them as reasonable. And tax deductible.

Have had my own site since you had to make them using HTML! I have a WordPress site on GoDaddy. There are tons of templates. They have instructions that can just walk you thru it. Check mine out. I started with a template, and then added plug-ins like a music player and an art gallery to make it look pretty custom without too much problem. gordonwimpress.com/

Basically if you're not updating on social media stuff, the web site is dead weight in this day and age.
You'll need to do somewhat regular updates to make it worth its time, and the easiest "no thought" method is a WordPress derived site.
To do anything past template, you'll need to know how to code, do graphics, etc - there's a reason that the folks who are GOOD at it get high five to low six figures a year!

Currently working on my site. It will be for tracking, mixing work as well as session work as those worlds seem to crossover a lot. Perhaps I will use it for my gigging jazz guitar portfolio as well. I was recommended squarespace by my friend who did web design for a local studio and his own. calebneijazz.com/
I think they look nice. Need to get mine going asap. I don't have recommendations beyond what I have used so... I think it's good. Also wordpress makes up like 37% of all sites. Could be a good way to go.

I used to play around with that. I think I used Host Gator and/or Freewebs back in the day. Basically WYSIWYG editors. Today I just use Typepad which is more for blogging. I've put stuff up on my google drive to share large files with folks but sometimes they say they can't access them for some reason, even when I share the link.

Google Drive's permissions suck, and require the recipient to have a Google account.
For that type of sharing, I usually use Mega myself, for sane download sizes it's a viable option even with the free account.
