Found one on-line that I like the look of, but have never played one. It does have that split option to play as a single coil. Interested in any opinions from this talented group.

It's a versatile instrument, and you can always get another pickguard to make it a SSS or a HH (or whatever) if you don't like it.

I don't think I could ever have a HSS Strat as my only Strat, but really what's not to like? That said, my only HSS Strat I converted to a Bari. I had a HSH that I converted to a HH. The other 4 are SSS.
Hmmmm...

After 20 years, I modded my Carvin Bolt (strat) to add a bucker in the bridge. I wish I'd done it early. I opted for the Fralin mod where the second tone pot acts as a blend between the bridge and neck pups. It's very versatile and useful. Since the mod, I've not looked back and play this guitar more than ever. Before...

I prefer HSS. A bridge single coil is just too shrill for me (unless I specifically want an Eric Johnson-style sparkly super clean, which is just about never). A nice PAF style humbucker is just a thing of beauty.
Notes on HSS to think about...
1) Balancing the humbucker and single coils volumes can be frustrating if you are used to SSS. Either allow the humbucker to be louder, or lower the humbucker to the where the volume matches better but live with the weird visual of a humbucker lower in height than a single coil. Only you will ever see it, everybody else will use their ears.
2) Personally, I don't use split coil or parallel mode humbucker because the volume drop compared to a full single coil bothers me. I have wired my two HSS guitars to have full humbucker at all times.
1 Bridge Humbucker 2 Bridge Humbucker + middle single (fatter version of strat posn 2 but still quacks) 3 Bridge Humbucker + neck single (sounds like a cross between middle single coil and middle position on a Les Paul). 4 Neck + Middle singles 5 Neck only
With this wiring scheme it is possible to do split coil in posns 2 and 3 and have hum cancelling but that wasn't important to me (and one guitar has noiseless singles anyway so it's not even an issue).

I put a Seymour Duncan Custom Custom humbucker at the bridge position on my Strat and added a 3 position toggle switch to split the coils and give me series or parallel options when combining it with the Texas Specials in the middle and neck positions. I still only ever use it is the humbucker mode.
