Playing on "Svengoolie" show right now, if anyone is interested. Stars Bela Lugosi before the morphine took hold.
It's an excellent print (digitally restored?).

Great atmosphere in that film. I saw it as a kid on Shock Theater (TV) and went into my whole "vampire phase" for several Halloweens. My dad had an old, old copy of Bram Stoker's novel in his library, which the movie inspired me to read.

I tuned in last night out of curiosity. They explained that the print they were showing had an added orchestral music score that was not in the original. Apparently it was from a French DVD. The original only had Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake playing over the opening credits and virtually no background music score for the rest of the movie. The added music added some atmosphere and worked quite well, but I much prefer the original version of the film.

Great atmosphere in that film. I saw it as a kid on Shock Theater (TV) and went into my whole "vampire phase" for several Halloweens. My dad had an old, old copy of Bram Stoker's novel in his library, which the movie inspired me to read. I also read the book (once during high school and then again, maybe 10 years ago) and had a strange reaction to it: thought the first half was masterful, but found that once the location moved to England the rest of the writing became very stiff and melodramatic. Basically, the first half struck me as creepy, the second half, corny. To be fair, the book was written long ago (1897) during a much different time, and remains one of the pioneering works of the genre, so it's a bit unfair to judge it too harshly.
