Such a general term, I know. I'm going to look at what I consider to be one type of hot rod this afternoon. It's a 32 Chevy, steel body car. I've looked at several hot rods lately; this one seems to check all the boxes for me. A/C and heat being two of them. Big tires in back, engine on display, head turner, etc. Who here still owns what they consider to be a hot rod? Pics please.

I see a number of these beautiful oldies in my area. What strikes me as incongruous, is that despite the obvious high horsepower capabilities of the massive engines, the drivers, who are predominantly senior citizens, don't race on the streets. The young drivers of Vipers and Challengers on the other hand ... smokin' the tires at every traffic signal.

The young drivers of Vipers and Challengers on the other hand ... smokin' the tires at every traffic signal. I was told by the seller that this engine hasn't been built, and that it's a car that is easy to drive. He said it's not loud, either. I'll find out this afternoon. I don't really care that much if it's really fast or not, for now, but I also don't know if I would mod it if I purchase it. I'm just looking for a fun car that might turn some heads. What you said is true gato, but you forgot to mention Mustangs.

Be forewarned that they are money pits, especially if you you can't do a lot of the work yourself. You'd better enjoy wrenching, or at least not hate it.
A cruiser is one thing, but if you plan to turn it into a neck-snapper, expect stuff to break. High-performance ≠ longevity.
That said, they're a lot of fun. Not saying you shouldn't jump in, just that you should have both eyes open to the downsides as well as the benefits.
I did one car frame up. To say it was a lot of work is a gross understatement.

Pretty happy with the head turner thing. Although some mods wouldn't be out of the question. Update: I did purchase the car this afternoon, and I drove it home, about 1.5 hours worth. It has a lot of little repairs that need to be done, but nothing (so far) that will cost a lot. More like little projects, most of which I'll probably enjoy doing.

Love the paint job on that -- Jeff Beck would approve!

I was a real gear head for years, then I lost the bug.
Still, sometimes I'd like to get something again, but thinking more along the lines of something near stock, but semi classic, like say a 1987 Buick Grand National.
Sure, a slug by todays fast car standards, but something about that car always rung my bell.
The Darth Vader looks, a sleeper sedan, a Buick that Buick had no clue how to sell, it kinda checks all the boxes. It would probably be more of a PITA than anything though, a 30+ year old GM? Hmmm...perhaps not. Then I'd probably end up getting stupid and modding the hell out of it.
My problem is I'm not brand loyal, not era loyal, not style/type loyal.
If I had too much money I'd probably be one of those fools with a huge warehouse of cars.
I should probably just stick to looking at car mag pictures, much cheaper, and no hassle.
There are a few of the modern muscle cars in town, the Camaro, Mustang, the Dodges, but although potent, they do nothing for me. No thanks.

Does a Ford Taurus SHO, with the Yamaha engine and five speed, qualify as a semi-classic? I had a second gen SHO, a '93, that was a great car. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Taurus_SHO

Those were cool as hell. I almost bought a white 1990 Cougar XR7, that had the supercharged V6 5 speed manual and every option including a DAT tape deck. Only had 210 HP but it did have over 300 pounds torque. It was a beautiful car, brand new, but had minor hail damage on the roof, the dealer just wouldn't discount it enough to get me to sign the papers. I wanted to see what insurance paid for the hail damage and he wouldn't let me know. Second issue was it was new but a model year old so there were no factory incentives available anymore. journal.classiccars.com/2020/01/09/sleek-feline-1990-mercury-cougar-xr7/

Looks like mebbe a dropped axle, then. That looks cool on a fenderless car. Probably will be fine on a cruiser...just watch out for those potholes!
Glad to see that nobody put giant rims and "rubberband" tires on it: to my eye, that is the ultimate abomination on those old cars.

Now, this might just flick my Bic, a 1993 Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4 in pearl white, same car at the Dodge Stealth, but with much better body lines. Back in the day, one of my bosses had a 3000 GT. It was a fun car to drive around in, even though I wasn't driving!

I don't have pictures, but a friend who's legally blind built a t-bucket roadster (his terminology) named Elrod. Since he's blind, he's frequently looking for drivers. It's a handfull and it can be stressful when he's constantly pushing you to really open it up.
Side note: he built it and, when he tried to register it they made him put fenders on it. It was an Iowa law at the time I guess.

I was hoping for more hot rod pics in this thread, maybe I'll post some pics of others I found or looked at.
Edit: On second thought, that probably wouldn't be the smartest thing to do....

Could only find a few PICs of the early stages of my old Plymouth. Mebbe I'll be able to dig up some more later:
Body off frame for blasting rusty floor pan:
Stripped & re-painted frame:
Body back on, positioning overhead 6 (to replace flathead) in engine bay:

Speaking of suicide doors, my friends parents had a 1964 white vert Continental with suicide doors when I was a kid. I loved to ride in it:
