I've always wanted to own a G&L just because it's not a Fender (I already have one of those). What is y'all's experience with them? What is the neck like? Thoughts on the pickups?
The specs say it has a Sassafras body. WTH is that?

Dude! I have one exactly like that. I didn’t post it here.
It’s a beaut! Needed a fret level and rewired, as they all do, but it’s a fantastic guitar.

I like it so much I bought it’s brother, a matching S500.
Sassafras looks a lot like ash with that “intentional” grain pattern. Is generally lighter, though.

Sure, but I don't play bass. lol! Eric, how does the neck profile feel?

It’s not import weenie profile. I find them comfortable although not big.
I can provide measurements tomorrow.

I'm more interested in the feel. As long as it's not weenie, I'm okay. lol!
I saw a Lake Placid Blue online in a review but I guess it's not made anymore. I'd buy that one in a heartbeat.

Yeah, those were a while ago.
I like these sassafras body burst. They have a nice red in them. I think they look even better in person.

I'm not a big burst fan but this pattern is subtle.

What’s the profile on your copper caster? I can use that as a comparison. I have a couple different Warmoth profiles here.

It's a Warmoth compound radius with a boatneck profile. It took me awhile to get used to it but I don't even notice it anymore when I pick it up.

Evidently "back in the day" Fender made a few Strats (and maybe Teles?) with Sassafras bodies; Eric Johnson ended up with one, and I believe one of his Signature models now has a Sassafras body... so he likes 'em.
Over all, G&L are well made guitars with Leo's later "improvements" over his Fender versions... in his mind anyway - but lots of folks seem to agree with him and like what G&L's bring to the table (or the stage).

I like the fact that you can get a G&L still made out of the Fullerton factory.
Been thinking about getting one for a while.

These are 42.2mm nut width (1 5/8") and 82mm thick behind the first fret. Essentially it should fell the same as your MIM Tele except for the nut width - which should be 1 11/16" on your Tele.
The other difference to consider is the G&L fretboard radius is 12". You Tele is 9.5". The G&L radius is closer to that of your LP.

Lefty, based on the one I have (which is a bass) I would not hesitate. I like G&L. For the options and price point involved I find them to be a more desirable product than Fender (yes, I will probably at least always keep up with Fender).

Thanks, Matrix! As an update, I've decided not to pursue this Bluesboy for a couple of reasons. 1) I already have a tobacco burst guitar (my Ibanez Artcore). 2) Since I'm looking for something different than what I already have, Leftee pointed out that the neck humbucker would sound similar to the P90 in my copper build. So, I'm considering the orange ASAT. I really like this color.
I looked into a Fullerton model but if I'm going to pay $1500 for a tele-style, it'll be time to build another one.

Ok, that one has the Magnetic Field Design pickups as well as what appears to be a maple fretboard. Sassasfras, from what I have read, is what is being used nowadays as swamp ash is becoming rare, if not an endangered species. A year ago, I was livestreaming a church service and heard and saw the guitarist play a solo with a beautiful tone. I went back and viewed that part of the service on the church's Facebook page. After some research, I realized that the guitar being played was a G & L ASAT. I thought those MFD pickups had a very nice tone. I've been wanting one for myself ever since.

I ordered this tonight. It's my birthday/Christmas/survived Covid present to myself. They're the actual photos.
The body is swamp ash with no tummy cut, so it must be NOS. Price includes shipping.

Fun story time... I used to live in Fullerton and would ride my bike past the G&L shop on my way to work. I stopped a few times and talked to the guys... they just had a roll up door in the back and it would be open. They'd be hanging out smoking cigarettes and were happy to chat. I never asked them to play anything, but I'm sure the answer would have been yes. I kick myself for not asking... I always wanted to play a Comanche.

That is beautiful! Those look like MDF’s, if so you are sure to find them different ( and in a food way) from any Fender or Fender style pickup

G&L makes great guitars. Purchased my first way back in 1998. My current is this 2021 ASAT Classic. 8.6 lbs
