Good morning, gentlemen. Sort of just thinking out loud here.... So, it turns out that I have a brand new set of Fender Custom Shop Texas Special pickups that I bought new several years ago and just never put them in a guitar. Can't have that, can we? I have a few Strats that I don't want to change. I like them the way they are. So, the most likely candidate for an upgrade is a very nice Torino Red Korean Squier that I've had for years. It's an "E7" that they sold in 1987 as a "'57 Reissue" Strat, even though it's not exactly an exact "reissue" per se (are they ever?). These MIK E7s are pretty nice instruments. Fender stamped saddles, full size trem block, Fender branded Gotoh tuners, single-ply 8 hole pickguard, vintage routing, alder body. The only cheesy thing on these guitars, in my opinion, is the Asian electronics....small pots, ceramic pickups, etc.
My only reservation is putting such costly pickups in a Squier, which leads me to "Plan B". I have a Jimmie Vaughan Strat, which I like, but wouldn't feel bad about making some changes to. I'm considering taking the complete loaded pickguard out of the Jimmie Vaughan and swapping it into the Squier. Both single-ply 8 hole pickguards. Should be a close fit but I'll make it work. I think that would make a nice Strat. Then, I will build a new pickguard for the Jimmie Vaughan using the Texas Specials and an Emerson 5-way Stratocaster pre-wired "blender" kit that I have also been hoarding for at least a couple years. The Jimmie Vaughan is Olympic White. This would also give me the opportunity to change from the single-ply white pickguard to something else to jazz up the looks a little bit.
Right now, I'm shielding the body cavity on the Squier. Haven't touched the Jimmie Vaughan yet. Still considering the options.
