So I received a warning today that we’ve used 192mb of space for photo attachments, and our total space for same is only 200mb. As we’ve been open a month, clearly this presents something of an issue.
My plan of attack for this is as follows:
1) I strongly encourage our users to use off-site photo hosting like Flickr. Those pictures are not uploaded to our site and don’t count against our limit.
2) I have the option of going in and deleting old attachments. Obviously I prefer not to do that, especially in threads that are dedicated to photos. But I could eliminate others. The interface allows me only to see which thread the attachment is posted in. I would only delete from the ones that are not specific photo threads.
3) Additional space can be purchased. However if it’s going to be growing at a rate of 192mb per month, it’s going to get costly. My intention is to try to keep this site free and in its current form. However, I’m also not volunteering to foot the bill, so if we want to increase storage space, it’ll require some monetary contribution. We aren’t there yet.
4) Of course, we can also just keep the present limit, which means that there will effectively be no more photo hosting here, and all images will have to be hosted offsite.
I’d love to have some discourse about this so we can figure out what works best for us. Let me know your thoughts!

I will henceforth start using Imgur to handle any photos I post here.

Do avatar images count towards that limit, or is it just for photo attachments?

Damn, sorry to hear that. I only put photos on my laptop or phone and resize smaller. I don't use any off site 3rd party. Photobucket scared me away from that!

Avatars allow up to 1MB. Reducing the size to a couple hundred KB could save a lot of storage.

200mb is TINY!
Even if you limited the photos to 500kb, you'd only get 400 photos stored.
Off site is the way to go. They look better hosted off site anyways. I use Flickr.

Postimages.org
Easy, free, light and resourceful. Best third party host site since Photobucket decided to charge.

What I do is if I want to post a picture, I go to Flickr and put it there, then I post it. I keep the “original” on my phone or computer if I need to keep it. Just saying, it would help.

Another good and free (and no account required) image hosting site is imgbb. Here's how. 1. Go here: imgbb.com/upload2. Click on 'browse from your computer' link in the center of the screen. 3. Navigate to the image on your local machine and double click it. 4. Click the green 'Upload' button. 5. "Upload complete" will be displayed. Double click the little image. It opens to full size. 6. Right click on the image. Left click on 'Copy Image Location'. You can now paste the URL into a message using the Insert Image button. This one:

Cheers, Mfitz804.
Perhaps something you can do is disable the "attach image" function and allow only images linked from image-hosting sites.
That would completely eliminate any housekeeping issues as well as prevent the site from busting the storage limit.

So, I’m not used to moving photos all around every which way. But I would like to eventually post a photo of my teles and of my amps. I would usually move them to my iPad from my phone and then post them. Is this NOT what you want to be done? Just saying I don’t want to do anything that is THE wrong thing desired by management.

Photo attachments have been disabled. You’ll need to use a photo hosting site and upload them there. Then you can use the link they provide to post the picture here. It’s an added step but doesn’t count toward our storage limit, and hence keeps the use of the site from costing anything. We’re going to try this way for a while. If we need to add the ability to post pictures directly back, there might have to be a fee charged to be eligible for that, so the cost of the additional photo hosting space is covered.

Do avatar images count towards that limit, or is it just for photo attachments? Avatars are included in that limit. Maybe my math is wrong? 200mb limit on attachments.
192mb used = 8mb remaining! Worst case scenario: If the maximum size for avatars is 1mb, that would mean there is only room for 8 more avatars if they are a maxed out. OK that's extreme. My own avatar shows on my PC as being 26kb. However:
remaining space for attachments is 8mb=8000kb 8000kb /26kb=(aprox)307.6
So even at 26kb, you would only have room for 307 more avatars.
500+members. Not all will use avatars but that's still pretty tight.

Yeah, math is not my thing, but yes, it is tight and I’ll likely need to start removing some of the pictures that were posted in threads. Not a fan of doing that, but it’s the difference between keeping the site free or having to charge a membership fee for certain privileges.

Even if you delete all the current attachments, that would only leave 200mb for avatars.
If there is a way to limit the maximum size of avatars to even less than 1mb, might want to do that too, like maybe no more than 100kb.

No, definitely mb. Avatars get automatically re-sized, I wonder if that affects the equation.

How does ProBoards charge for increased space? Are their tiers?
