Carlin was an innovator even though he had some deep roots in Bruce, etc. The problem was that eventually everyone copied his model including the vast majority of politicos on social media. No matter how cleverly conceived and crafted, it's all ad Hominem/fashionable misanthropy when dissected. Somewhere along the way people forgot that this was entertainment and not a thesis on the stupidity of mankind.

I don't mind occasional profanity/obscenity in comedy, but some comedians lean on it far too heavily because their material is otherwise too weak to stand on its own. Real witty material doesn't require any use of it whatsoever. Same goes for sexual and/or disgusting material: titillating and gross do not automatically equal "funny", there has to be something more thoughtful behind it. The term "cheap laugh" comes to mind: over-reliance on such material is basically just lazy.
Another pet peeve: for me, use of the "N" word four times in every sentence by some African-American comedians is more distracting than funny and has already been done to death by now. True wit is clever in and of itself and doesn't need to be propped up by "shock-value" crutches.
"Outrageous" loses its impact with over-use anyhow.

Somewhere along the way people forgot that this was entertainment and not a thesis on the stupidity of mankind. I disagree to a point, in as much as I think that the "universality" of much humor is based in part on an underlying recognition of the common, human foibles and shortcomings shared by all members of the audience and the comedian him/herself. But I agree that humor based on disparaging remarks directed towards specific people gets old pretty quick.

Yeah, I think my "it's all ad Hominem/fashionable misanthropy when dissected." may have been mis-phrased. I'm speaking about the "Carlinian Way".

Changing the whole meaning with a change of punctuation.
Andy Kaufman: what am I missing .............. seeking opinions about the comedian
Andy Kaufman, what am I missing ................ asking a dead man to comment on your life

Norm Macdonald is one of the greats. Billy Connolly too.
Comedy is incredibly diverse, and subjective.
