...and later that night found a duck egg just sitting in the rocks...
Would it be crazy to try and hatch it?

Not to be a buzzkill...but...if anything hatches, it will more likely be a duck rather than a giraffe.
Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings...

You’re seriously contemplating not frying it?

my FIRST thought was the Dr Seuss story... HORTON HATCHES THE EGG!!! you might wanna read it first before you try to hatch it...
my grampa always said that the FIRST thing a duck/chicken/goose sees after it's hatched becomes it's mother...

OK, so there's a little detail I didn't let y'all in on at the start. We found the egg two weeks ago and already had it in an incubator. I wanted to make sure it was viable before I posted. After we found it, we ordered an inexpensive incubator on amazon and got it in. My wife read a bunch about it and learned that you can candle the egg after about 10 days and see if there's something growing inside. Also, at that point you're supposed to pull them out each day, mist them with water and let them cool about 10 degrees. She candled either thursday or friday and there's definitely something growing. Over the weekend we could see movement. So...in about 2 weeks, barring any disasters, we're going to have a baby duck. Taildragger - While I didn't expect a guy raif from the egg, your news is disappointing nonetheless. I'm sorry to report there are no pictures of me sitting on the egg. I will post some pics of the incubator and, if all goes well, the hatching etc.

According to the Google oracle, pet ducks live 10-15 years.

You should name one “Horton.” It just seems right.

Yeah, my main concern is that it's a velociraptor.

Well, our little duckling is still progressing. We candled yesterday and lots of movement. We could easily identify a head. It reacted strongly to the light. About 10 days and we should be hatching. The wife (no pics) bought a brooder and some duck food.

If our little egg is gonna hatch, it should be in the next few days. We've seen movement in the egg when "candling" right up until yesterday. Wife is guessing that lack of movement is because there's just no space in there. It's packed in tight now.
We'll post pics...maybe vid if we can, when/if it hatches. I hope it's not a corn snake or a velociraptor. We'll know soon enough.

So, I think we're getting close. The egg moves on its own just sitting, so the occupant is big enough to rock it some. I'm thinking some cracks in the shell are imminent.

It's a Duck!!! Hatched out this morning. Not sure if males have their color at birth, so not sure on sex. Cute little thing, but still wet and scruffy looking.
