Just had the fan on the outside unit and a capacitor repaired on mine today. Nice to be cooler that’s for sure.

Well the weather here broke last night, it was 91 degrees on the second floor when I went to bed, and when I woke up three hours later, it was down to 77.
Today was hotter than expected (78), and it’s still warmer in here than I prefer, but it’s tolerable.
The evaporator coil replacement is scheduled for between 8:30-10 am tomorrow, and I am really, really hoping they can get the job done and That it was, in fact, the cause of the problem.
If not, I seem to be getting a season out of refilling the system, am I awful if I just pay to have it charged every year rather than trying to redo my whole system and/or find whatever the heck is leaking?

No judgement here. But the problem will only get worse.

Mike, how old is your system? Only 8 years. Very disappointed.

Yeah, that sucks. Our house was built in 2005 and apparently the evaporator coil was replaced in 2012 (we've been here since March 2020). According to the HVAC guy who properly diagnosed my issue, cost of a whole system replacement is going up monthly. That may be part of his gig but I can believe it. I'm sure a new system would get me better efficiency, not sure what new tech has been developed in last 8 years though.

Our main problem is access. The unit was probably put in when the attic was half finished, so it’s near impossible to get to. I had one company come and tell me that the evap coil couldn’t be replaced without cutting a hatch in the floor into my daughter’s bedroom ceiling.
I was hesitant to do that because the aesthetics would please neither my daughter or my wife, and I was worried that the noise form the air handler, which you can already hear with the ceiling closed, would intensify if there was a hatch between.
My MIL is at the house for the install. They arrived about 20 minutes ago and no calls so far.

I’m monitoring the situation by watching the techs come in and out of the house.
I watched the old, “impossible to remove” coil come out, and the new coil come in. So I’m pretty excited about that.
As long as that was the issue, we should be good to go!

For the time being, it’s running and it’s cold.
When the guy ran my credit card, he only charged us for about a third of the quoted price. I told my mother in law to sign it and close the door.
Unfortunately, the guy realized his error and came back to run the card again for the balance.
The end result is I have working air, a tech that knows how to get the coil out without having to butcher my ceiling, and a big bill lol.
