It's all greek to me but I find this thread intriguing. The only radios I ever had were CBs That's how i got started... a bunch of kids playing with CB radios and seeing how far we could talk to. that bug bit me and i read about ham radio in the library. i kept trying to find out how to be a ham and people told me about this guy... i tracked him down and he had moved.
i finally found another... i guess you could look in the internet and find an AMATEUR RADIO CLUB in your area. i'm certain those guys would be tickled pink to get you started.
there are so many facets of this hobby... different ways to use it. i have several that i rotate thru. like any hobby, it can become a money pit. before my accident i was playing a lot of guitar and couldn't be satisfied with one, i had a room full in no time... same with radios and accessories. one thing leads to another.
having been victimized in the past by dishonest sellers, i don't buy used from the internet anymore. i buy used or consigned gear from the amateur radio stores on the internet. ham radio outlet is a good place to start. HRO...
i hope you can get involved... if you get into the amateur radio FB groups, there's a lot of arguing ... be selective who you listen to. some are sour and grouchy and will B**** ALL THE TIME AT YOU... ignore the BS...

yes, i've never been able to catch him that i'm aware of. i saw a list of musicians that are/were hams and i was really surprised... all i can remember at the moment are Joe and Chet...but there were several names i recognized.
there is a "rock" net on 40 somewhere, i used to listen. they play trivia a lot. propagation got so bad i stopped trying to hear and have forgotten where it is. seems like they have a FB group.

I just picked up a Elecraft KH1, I want to get back to doing quick picnic table portable ops and get my CW back.
