You only know one Todd song? Have you been hiding under a rock?

Wow, Chris is an absolute monster. Current quintessential mandolin player. I do not know if his talents extend beyond that monstrous ability as a player. My wife knows Johnny Burns, son of Homer and Jethro mando player Jethro. Johnny has also opined Cris is the real deal.

I hadn't heard of Johnny Burns. I'll have to check him out. I saw Jethro Burns and Steve Goodman many years ago. If you get a chance, check out Chris Thile on Live From Here. He plays many styles of music very fluently.

Johnny is a guitar player, played for John Prine for years. The only reason I brought him up in this thread is that he knows a lot about mandolin players, his dad was THE mando guy for years, we were talking about Chris Thile who is the mando guy now, and Johnny seemed to hold Chris in high regard. I have seen some of Johnnys stuff online but I dont think there is a whole lot, not sure. In any case, great discussion IMHO.

I'm surprised that there's only been a couple of mentions of Brian Wilson. He burned very bright for a short while and then sort of burned out.
His single-minded vision and the innovative originality of his writing, arranging and production in that time, with little to no musical training is the stuff of legend and pure genius.
And mind you, I'm not a big Beach Boys fan.

Drugs and mental illness are to Brian Wilson as air crashes are to Buddy Holly, more or less.

Pretty broad brush term to paint with. Lot's of folks involved with/in music have/had mad skills, but their success was not due to them alone. I guess it would have to be categorized...writer, performer, instrument(s) played, vocals....
