I hate cars and I'm a lousy driver. I wanna move but I think here in New York City is about the only place where there is so much access to music and musicians but you can actually get by without needing a car. (as I do)
I'd love to move to another "music town" like Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, even L.A. but I think for all of these places, a car is a necessity.
Anyone actively involved in music but living someplace besides NYC and managing without a car?
(It's a little late in the game for me to move out of the country, but I wouldn't rule it out either.)

Wow. Except for the high cost of living where you are, it sounds almost heavenly to me ! Driving long distances in the snow and rain and tornados and hurricanes and in the dark of night can really DEmotivate getting together with others. It certainly inhibits me because I don't like to drive either. There's nothing worse than loading equipment in the rain/heat/wind/dust etc, in the dark, a couple of times a night, after an hour or two of driving back and forth ! That gets old fast and it's easier to stay home. So I dunno...you might want to make the best of it. You want a roommate ?

Yeah well that's why I'm here 30+ years now.
But it ain't easy. Expensive as you say and I just barely get by. I'm not getting rich, I'm not good enough to get paid the big bucks. I really like being able to get around without a car and still play lots of music. It's not bad, but I sure could use a change.

Blows my mind how many that come from New York City do not have a drivers license. Guess If I lived there I would understand

I reckon once I complete my move west I'll have to check out Austin since it'll be a 2.5 hr drive. From the sound of it, that city is one of the worst places to drive but tops many lists as THE place to go for music.

Thanks, Austin definitely a contender. Was there briefly about 12 years ago. Great town, vibrant music scene. Don't know how practical it would be without a car.
BTW I do have and maintain a New York Driver's license. Good for ID purposes and if something comes up where i do need to drive. I don't own a car and I don't much care for driving but i can drive. Been about 3-4 years since the last time I was behind the wheel.

Only slightly off-topic, but my wife and I have visited NYC on five occasions. We absolutely love the place. The subway system is a great way to get from one point to another, as long as you still have some degree of mobility. You do have to walk to the subway stations, but they are rather numerous. Of course, Manhattan is a thick, hard rock, which is more practical to bore into than, say, swampy mud.
And Chicago has its elevated trains.
It's nice not having to fight traffic.

Yeah, self driving cars can't come fast enough for me !
Imagine, letting the car drive the hour to a gig while you warm up on guitar and/or voice !
Or telling the self driving car to drive to some park or in the country while you play while looking at everything !
As for Uber and whatever...ha. Not the same thing.
Even a deaf chauffeur isn't the same.
Nah. Give me a nice self driving car with one way windows and I'll be working on my chops while driving EVERYWHERE.
Last stat I saw was that people tended to drive 83% further in a driverless car.
I'd beat that 6 times over !
I've never liked driving, and never will.
But playing ?
And watching the world go by ?
You bet !
Even Austin's traffic would be a breeze with a driverless car...

My daughter has lived in and around Boston since the early 2000s. She's not a musician but is very engaged with the local music. She's never had a driver's license and uses the T, Uber, and buses to get wherever she needs to go.
I live well down on the south shore and its a nightmare to commute into the city -- but I did it for 25 years. If you already live there it's no so bad.
If you can handle the rent in NYC you should be able to find something just outside of Boston that you can afford.
