Who didn't have one of those growing up?
I got the bug, earlier this year, to make one out of scraps I had laying around. That first one was on the crude side and made of a White Oak core sandwiched between Walnut. While, ugly-ish, it was a success.
My second failed. One of the arms broke off along the grain. So back to the drawing board.
For my third I went somewhat fancier. I'd got the process/order of build down in my head, so I went a little wild with it.
1/2" Walnut core sandwiched with 1/4" canary - with that grain perpendicular to the Walnut's.
The handle is 1/8" layers... from the core out: 1. Zebra 2. Cherry. 3. Padouk. 4. Purpleheart. 5. Canary
I use 5/16" latex tubing and some pretty thick reinforced leather for the sling.
It shoots well and far. As far as total range, it's probably good for 50 yards (not accurately, of course). I am surprised at how accurate I can be at 10 - 15 yards.
This is an addictive hobby. It's a load of fun making these! And then you have something to reach your inner boy when it's done.

Looking at the handle makes me think it would be great for serving a ping-pong ball.
I see a championship table tennis trophy in your future...

I remember making slingshots out of the crotch of a tree branch and a piece of old inner tube and we’d shoot small pebbles or “steelie” ball bearings.

I figure I’m going to make one for each of the grandkids. But first their parents are going to have to sign a waiver. 😂

Beautiful craftsmanship Leftee. Wish I could have one.
Unfortunately I am quite sure they are not "Massachusetts Compliant"

I had a "wrist rocket" back in college days. It put some zip on those steel balls.

Nice Leftee!
I did not have one, I would have just got in trouble. Same for a BB gun.

When I was a boy a slingshot was made from a forked tree limb and an old bicycle inner tube.
Two slits on each side of the fork to hold the rubber and some pebbles and we were entertained for hours, and it was inevitable that someone was going to get shot in the ass.

Very cool Eric! As a kid at our grandparents house we used to climb in a tall China Berry tree in their Chicken yard and had a great time shooting at our cousins. China Berrys were perfect (round, hard about 1/2” in diameter.

I was fortunate that my dad still had a lot of "kid" in him as an adult. He bought a couple wrist rockets when I was pretty young. They're like a slingshot on steroids in that they have a brace that goes over your arm to help support them as you draw back. Pretty cool. We used to take our boat along the shoreline and try to knock turtles off the logs where they'd be sunning themselves.
He also used to slingshot M-80s into the air.

we used SS's as a kid, got fairly proficient. mom was a farm girl from southern MO and had been taught to use the SLING version like David used on Goliath. she taught me... talk about some power! i got really good with that. i bought one a few years ago thinking i was going to practice but found out my rotator cuff was too far gone.
i've seen the youtube videos about some of them. amazing... there's even semi-auto's now.
