This particular fire is about 50 miles north of us in the Jefferson National Forest. The last I checked, it's about 150 acres. I think these guys were using a big field at the end of the runway at the airfield across the street from our house. I'm guessing for refueling, bio-breaks, etc.
The sky was extremely hazy this afternoon - as you can see in these latest pics. That is all smoke. It was blue sky above.

Wow, I remember when I was around 13 and I was suffering from a case of the mumps and my uncle, a very good sax player, stopped to visit me and played this great jazz version on “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” on my bari sax. It was really a cool moment in my life.

I don't want nothin but this little piece of plastic between my head and that fire. Over here, nothin', but I part my hair on this side and if that little piece of plastic melts, well, my hair just ain't gonna look right.

Thanks Rocky. I don’t think we’re in any danger here. We have a sheriff deputy who rents our basement apartment and I happened to be outside, last night, when he came home. He said that it is not contained but that there have been no structures involved and the only danger to people has been the smoke. He said he spent his shift responding to complaints from people that their neighbors were burning trash or burn piles… which is illegal at this time in the county. Some rain is in the forecast for next Tues. But that’s far off to actually count on happening. Here’s a good article on the fire. www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/matt-s-creek-fire-is-still-0-contained-and-has-spread-significantly/ar-AA1k08jD

As of today the fire has burnt or is burning >10,000 acres. Thankfully it’s raining today and we’re expecting 3” of precipitation by this evening. The fire was 33% contained according to the latest report. Hopefully today puts an end to this. Here are some good images from the area. www.wdbj7.com/2023/11/18/photos-see-matts-creek-fire-bedford-county/
