I was told once when I was a kid I couldn't sing so I never have.
So I play bass with some groups who occasionally perform in public and lately I have been asked by a couple of them if I would sing.
One person even paid me the compliment of "you sound as if you could probably stay in tune".
So yesterday they gave me a microphone and I started trying to do some backing vocals.
It felt weird.
Any tips for a complete beginner ?

Get a voice instructor. That's the fastest way from point A to point B.

Good to warm up with some scales or exercises. Sing around the house or when you are driving.

Voice is an instrument. You have to learn to sing a song the same way you have to learn to play it. I agree with ninworks. Take some lessons and lear how to use your voice. You will get better and more confident.

As a bass player I think you’ll find separating the rhythm of what you’re playing from the rhythm of what you’re singing to be the hardest to accomplish. I remember playing the Teena Marie song “Lover girl” and the struggle I had to keep playing a fluent bassline while singing the syncopated (three-on-four) vocal harmony at the end of the song. The singing is easy, just listen to what you’re doing. The hard part is tying the singing and bass playing together.
