Working without a net: every new parent is faced with monumental on-the-job-training. Their quaint theories about childrearing, fondly massaged during the pregnancy, tend to melt away during that 3:00 am non-stop screeching of a newly arrived infant.
They may briefly consider looking at their own childhood as an apprenticeship, but then think, "those people who raised me made a lot of mistakes that I'm not going to repeat."
Then they go about making cringeworthy new mistakes of their own, and eventually write books on parenting correctly. Which their parents later read and wonder, "where did I go wrong?"

I've learned a lot about my mistakes as a parent, watching the missteps of our own kids with their children. There is much "wisdom" a parent can pass down to their kids who have children of their own, but it can be risky business. Take it too far and the whole dynamic can turn into a made for TV family drama. I suppose when it comes to any relationships we're always working without a net.

I tell my kids to make their own mistakes, don't make mine also. In general they don't listen
Wisdom is not something easily passed on.

Yeah, I don't know what to say. Our daughter rarely speaks to us, our sons think she's crazy. You do the best you can but rest assured somebody at some point...well you know.
