Miray Cruises, promoters of a three year cruise around the world, with stop offs in exotic places, (Great Wall of China, Pyramids of Giza, Machu Pichu) have had a bit of trouble signing people up (less than half the cabins booked). But now the ship they had pegged for the extended excursion is no longer available at the price they planned on. (It's now $40-50 million). They may have to "go Titanic" on the whole concept. I've been on a cruise. Although it was only 7 days, it gave me a glimpse into life aboard a cruise ship. But 1,095 days? Put me under sedation!
Then I read about serving a life sentence aboard a cruise ship: retiring aboard an ocean liner, at only $77,000 per year. You get to live in what's called a "residence at sea," with "homes" from 237 square feet to 1,970 square feet.
Dang ... if I wanted this kind of lifestyle, I'd just drive an RV into a swimming pool.

But would you get a midnight buffet?

Everybody we know that goes on a cruise comes back with the you-know-what!

Everybody we know that goes on a cruise comes back with the you-know-what! In my RV pool cruise, the chlorinated water serves as a moat to microscopic critters

I did a river cruise in France that was amazing. Did a Caribbean ocean cruise that I hated. We did some fun stuff at the stops, but being on the ship (meals, accommodations, crowd, other amenities) were just not my thing. They had "nice" restaurants , but it only took us a couple days to realize many were just basically plating the same food you could get at the buffet.
I'm good hanging out at the pool, but not the loud music, drunken idiot, spring break version. We avoided the pool at all costs.
They had some cool things on board: go-cart track, laser tag, etc., but you had to make an appointment the first day to get to do any of them just once. We never did do the laser tag as we couldn't get a reservation.
They had a large space allocated for the casino, but we don't gamble.
We spent most of our time on a lower deck outside reading and drinking Chickentails. When you consider what we were paying per day, it was completely not worth it.
Won't do another one again. 3 years? Shoot. Me. Now.

We’d love to do a cruise of European ports.

We did a Mediterranean cruise on a 600 passenger ship last summer with a few days in Lisbon before and Nice at the end. Had a great time. I'm a history buff so I did some research before we sailed. My wife was a art history major in college so she was my tour guide for most of the journey. A cruise is not for everyone but we love it. As with everything in life it is what you make it.

I was okay by the second day of the 7 day cruise, once I found the ship's library.

My family enjoys cruising, with Alaska being our favorite. My wife's parents would be among those that would go on the 3-year cruise. They go on 3-month cruises a couple times per year, and then 2-4 week cruises a few more times per year. It's what they enjoy, so they can have at it. Too long for me, though.

Took a 40 mile cruise today to pick up an antique desk ($47! at auction). My kinda cruise. Home for pork chops dinner, no lines.

I'm thinking about surprising my wife with a 45th wedding anniversary cruise up the Los Angeles River:
Hey, you only live once...
Passing under the picturesque Figueroa Bridge

I love the sea. Especially when the surf is up. Last cruse I was on the sea's were rough. Most people were turning green I was loving it. When the bow crashed down the spray was going at least 100 feet.
I probably was a pirate in a former life.

When I was running the steel mill they called me Lt Dan.
I always pictured it like I was in the crows nest in a hurricane shaking my fist at the wind.
(I'm sure they meant it as an insult)
Like in Forrest Gump.

But would you get a midnight buffet? Not my thing but imagine you could leave thin and come back a bit heavier, not to mention a bit less sane

When the bow crashed down the spray was going at least 100 feet. I probably was a pirate in a former life. I'm a boat rat. Was boating on the Mississippi when I was less than a year old. Growing up we literally lived on our houseboat every weekend of the summer. Would have started younger but I was born after boating season in the fall. My little sister was on a boat when she was a week old. I sailed competitively, transferred sailboats from Mackinac Island to Chicago every summer, bareboat cruised in the Bahamas and I currently own 3 boats (2 sail, one motor). Plan to spend a year living on a boat doing the great loop when I retire (if I can sell my wife on it). We also had rough seas when I did a cruise. I was fine, one of my daughters was barfing constantly. I slept like a baby. All that being said, I have no interest in 3 years (or even 3 weeks) of sitting in a boat eating mediocre food and having a very finite number of options for entertainment. I would much rather spend 3 years hitting those places on my own schedule doing it my way. Sitting on a cruise ship is about as far from boating as you can get IMO. Other than the fact that it might rock in rougher seas, it's more like being stuck in a small city with limited entertainment options and gates that are locked a large percentage of the time.
