Got some nasty pain in my heel last night, got worse overnight and real bad this morning. Googled it, probably just plantar fasciitis. Not too concerned. My daily shoes are VERY worn and I'd be procrastinating switching to a new pair (which I've had sitting in the closet ready to go), and it is likely the cause. In any case, it is always fun to see what the google results were like.
Apparently, I should avoid: - sitting - standing - lying down - wearing shoes - going barefoot
Looks like I'll be suspended from circus rings with swimming flippers for the next few days.
Within the first page of results was the suggestion that it could be cancer. Seriously? When I actually HAD cancer, websites all said it was highly unlikely with my symptoms. Now anything else I google it tells me CANCER CANCER CANCER. Jerks.
Problem will probably go away. I'll go find some tennis balls to roll my foot on. Hopefully with inflation I can find them for under $50.

Add moccasins to that list. I had an episode several years ago. It’s very painful but relatively easy to remedy, starting with decent footwear and regular stretching. I had been moving a bunch of heavier items to my garage while wearing moccasins on a mostly concrete surface. Last year, I felt an episode coming on because I was spending too much time in flip flops on the floor tile. A quick change to real footwear and some stretching and “poof”, it was gone.

That'll do the trick!

I battled this for a year a few years ago, and after all kinds of shots, boots, orthotics etc., the cure was stretching my hamstrings and calves. After a few weeks it went away and hasn’t returned. I can’t recommend stretching enough.

I had that a number of years ago. Something that helped me a lot was recommended by my chiropractor. Get a plastic bottle of water and freeze it. Then while you're sitting down roll it back and forth with your foot in the same way you would a tennis ball. Do that for both feet if needed. That's something easy to do while watching TV. If it's too cold, put on a thin sock. I did it barefoot. It really did help me but it took nearly a year for it to go away completely.

I wear sandals a lot, nothing special just the cheap kind, hanging on a rack at the drug store. When I suffered plantar fasciitis, the doctor I saw recommended replacing the flat sandals with a more costly version that has good arch support. That, plus some of the ball rolling did the trick for me.

The weird thing is if I ever have footwear/posture issues, it hurts my knees and my feet have been fine. I've been assuming this is a one time thing because I'd been trying to get the last bit of life out of a pair of Sperry's that are so old I can't remember when I bought them. It kinda became a game, but it obviously isn't working now.
I'm stretching and got some tennis balls to roll my feet on. It helps. May try a water bottle too, if it means I can drop more weight on it. I'm curious about it going as far up as calves and hamstrings. I do tend to have a pretty stiff posterior chain - I exercise a bit, but standing still at a workbench makes me very, very stiff. I wonder if other mobility drills would help in this case.
Will probably wear sneakers to work today. I'm not a daily sneaker person because when they wear out they wear unevenly and hurt my knees (inside wears faster and the soles are diagonal), but will probably make sense for now.
Hopefully this isn't another old man thing I can look forward to for the rest of my life.

I can’t recommend stretching enough. I had plantar fasciitis back in January of this year. The podiatrist recommended the stretches and a pair of Brooks Beast shoes. I was used to getting tennis shoes in deals in the $30US price range, but these cost 5 to 6 times as much. And I have worn them since. After a week of stretches, the foot still hurt, and I also came down with bronchitis. The urgent care doctor prescribed an antibiotic and a steroid, both in pill form. That evening, I took the pills with my supper. When I got up after supper and walked around, I noticed that my foot did not hurt for me to walk on it. The steroid pill worked better on the plantar fasciitis than it did on the bronchitis.

The steroid pill worked better on the plantar fasciitis than it did on the bronchitis. Funny you should mention that, it seems like it is mostly a nerve thing. There is no injury, there isn't anything "heal" as far as I can tell.... Hmm....

The orthopedic doctor, who recommended the stretches, explained to me that as the calves tighten that pulls on the Achilles and heel tissue, which then pulls on the plantar fascia. The fascia, being the thinnest of the tissues, is the first thing to get irritated.

Yeah, mine flares up when I wear my sneakers way past their expiration date. Thing is, it can take a really long time for it to go away, so you gotta stay in front of it.
Believe it or not, I've switched to Crocs in the summer and had zero issues. Is there anything Crocs aren't best at in the summer?

My guess is that Crocs have a really hard bottom that doesn't lose shape. It is why I was a boat shoe guy for a long time. They used to have a more boot like bottom. Maybe not the best support out of the box, but they didn't tilt to one side after a month or two. I have an uncle that used to swear up and down that the best thing for his back problems was cowboy boots, and I suspect it is something similar there, too.
I tried some small stretches and my calf on that side was VERY tight, and my hamstrings have never been all that flexible. I tend to make noises when I have to pick something up off the floor... not a strength thing, just a flexibility thing.
It doesn't sound like anyone here wants it ever again, and maybe mine isn't as bad as it could've been, so perhaps this is just the shot across the bow to make sure I behave myself.

Hopefully this isn't another old man thing I can look forward to for the rest of my life. My experience has been a resounding "yes!" This and so many other things come back to haunt. Sincerely, Older Man

Yeah, I have a few old man things. I've also been able to avoid a bunch by being more intentional about diet and exercise. When I was young, you could just "stay active", but I'm not convinced anyone can really stay healthy without intentional exercise in the 21st century - we're too sedentary.
This could be a side effect of the exercise - doing more of the exercises I like, not enough of the ones I need - and ending up with the mobility issues in the process. Of course, combined with standing at a bench all day.
