I've had this happen. Mostly, they ignore us and just cruise up and down the beach just outside the surfline, looking for fish. The surfing inside the wave thing is very common. But occasionally, they seem to enjoy "playing chicken" with surfers. I'm sure they know right where you are, via their echo-location/sonar, but I doubt that that works while they're airborne and I'm not sure how good their eyesight is in terms of depth perception.
In any case, it's kind of a disconcerting experience, inasmuch as any miscalculation on their part won't end happily for the surfer involved, since bottle nosed dolphins weigh several hundred pounds.
