My daughter and son-in-law gifted me with a Roomba j5+. Self-cleaning (best feature) with a mopping attachment (will probably not use it). Cute little beggar, it uses AI to establish its home (charging station/dust bin) and maps the house where it can travel and vacuum. As with everything today, there’s an app. The map is pretty darn accurate. You can schedule it to vacuum; I have it scheduled MWF starting at 1 pm. Every once in a while it’ll go back home to empty the junk that it vacuumed - how human is that? - and recharge if it needs too. Total job time for our living area is about 3 hours. I find myself talking to it: “Hey where’re you going now?” As if it were a pet or a kid. 😆 Maybe there’ll be a version where it listens and replies with certain personalities. Teenage snarky version: “What do you care?”
In all seriousness it’s pretty cool. Just have to watch when it goes under the bed and starts dragging Combat roach baits.

I’ll be curious to see how long you remain in love with it. Please give us a one or two month review.

The wife of a guy I know stepped on it and fell breaking both wrists. Be careful out there.

Years ago I had one of the early models. It constantly got hung up on flared table legs, extension cords, carpets, and would get stuck after trying to go under a couch. It's little chirps and cries for help became really annoying, as instead of having an autonomous, hands free vacuum, I was doing more work than I would have, doing the job with my plug in cannister vacuum.
I understand they're better now, but yes, as someone else wrote ... please give us updates on your Roomba critter.

I've had a Roomba i7+ for three years and am totally satisfied with it.
The new version has the Pet Owner Official Promise (P.O.O.P), with a forward facing camera that recognizes "pet waste", so if your Roomba runs over it they will replace it for free.
For me it was a no-brainer, I live alone and have cats. As long as you give it a good looking over once in awhile, keep it clean, keep the brushes in good shape, it's a great product.
Don't tell anyone, but I use the knockoff version of the filters and brushes found on Amazon, and they work just fine.

We have two - a Roomba and an Amazon knockoff. Like Mr. Tree says, maintenance is everything. It's not hard or expensive to do, but neglecting them degrades performance.

We've had roombas for quite a few years (going back to the mid teens at least). We got the first one on a black friday deal. We've upgraded a couple times and passed the older ones off to the kids.
We currently have two of them, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. For the most part they work very well. They map and clean in an organized pattern (unlike our first one which used a random pattern) and they return to the dock to recharge and resume cleaning. They're not flawless though. The basement one gets caught under our recliner all the time. Ours doesn't have the auto-dump but we typically only need to empty them about once a week.
They have trouble docking, but that's on my wife. I've tried to tell her that the instructions say they need to be on a wall with at least 3 of open space. She wants them tucked into corners or hidden next to a piece of furniture. So a couple times a week we have to save them, but, for the most part, they work very well.
My wife loves the perfect back and forth pattern they leave on the carpet and they do pick up a ton of pet hair and such. Using these, we can generally get by pulling out the central vac about once every two weeks. I imagine we'll continue to use them.
"PLEASE CHARGE ROOMBA" is heard fairly frequently in our house.
Oh, and we named ours. The upstairs unit is called Bertie (Bertie Bot) and the downstairs unit is Bennie.

The new version has the Pet Owner Official Promise (P.O.O.P) I'd hate to need that promise. We have small dogs and have had for years. Usually, two at a time and for quite a few years three. Outside of a few weeks of training as puppies; I can't recall ever having anything inside the house. I guess I should feel fortunate.

Robie’s gone through about 6 vacuum jobs so far and it ran into a little snag today. There was a thread wound around the spinning side brush and I got a maintenance alert on my phone. I cleared the thread and pressed the button on top of Robie (that’s his name, doncha know). It moved a bit and stopped. New message: filter needed cleaning so I removed it and banged it on the side of the trash can. I noticed the dust bag was pretty full so I removed it. Empty it or trash it? I checked online and was advised to just chuck it. The product store on the app sells 3 bags for $19.99. Amazon has a maintenance kit including 8 bags, 8 filters, 8 side brushes, 2 sets of rollers and other miscellaneous things - all for $29.99 plus free shipping. Since I have Prime I went with the kit. Sheesh!

Yeah, getting a thread wound around the brush happens with any vacuum cleaner as does the bag filling up. The difference is the amount of dust it can hold before cleaning is less here. Changing bags is why we bought a vacuum that is bagless.

Sheesh! Ouch. Ours doesn't have any disposable items like that per se. The little side sweeper brush needs to be replaced about once a year and there's a filter that we replace when we replace the side sweeper. In between we just bang it on the edge of the trash can and hit it from the clean side with some compressed air.

Update: After a month, I’ve noticed how the Roomba really is like a pet: It trains the “master” to take care of it and the household. I put items like stools and my guitar gear away before it does its scheduled vacuuming. I have to be diligent about cleaning the filter and cleaning any debris in its accessible parts. My iPhone went through an update so I’ve lost communication with it. I need to resynch the wi-fi connection to it. It still does its scheduled job though. The carpet is cleaner so I’m still in honeymoon mode.

I recall one of my earliest posts at the FDP was "So I bought a Roomba". It, like the FDP, is long gone. My wife has been eyeing them again lately. Man, they're expensive.

Following with interest. Down here in my not-so-new home state of Texas hard floors with area rugs are the norm with carpeting in the bedrooms. I wonder how well one of these would work here given that we have three littles that are messy beasts.

My wife watches two grands 5 days a week - both under 3. It’s hard to use ours because we really have to pick up all the toys - everywhere they might be.
