I’ve been planning to pick up another delay pedal. I have a Maxon AD999 it will stay where it is. Looking for an additional pedal for another board.
I had a Boss DD3 and sold it. I really didn’t have a complaint with it, just let it go when I purchased the Maxon delay. 🫤
I’m almost leaning toward buying another DD3, but thought it might be worth asking if there are others I should consider.
All thoughts welcome. 😀

I love my AD999, what about getting another? They are expensive but the AD999 Pro is a pretty sweet unit.

Thinking of having another “different” pedal. Probably not as large a footprint and hopefully a bit less costly.
With that said, I’m not trying to limit my choices … necessarily. 😜

I understand that and was thinking about that as I was typing above.
I haven't tried either of these, so now you know what my opinion is worth, but the Catailinbread Belle Epoch has really good reputation on the web.
Though I haven't tried those, I do have 3 of their pedals and 2, the Treble booster and phaser, are amount the best of the 2 types of the many ive tried.

Well I found a great price on the Bell Epoch and bought it. I'll let you know how I like it but from the videos and reviews I saw it should be a nice compliment to the AD999.

If you search the Sweetwater site for delays in the 100$ to 200$ price range you will find a lot of choices! The TC Electronic Flashback and Flashback 2 pedals have the Tone Print feature and a 40 second looper besides the other options. Used and new prices are decent imho.
I own a Belle Epoch and use it when I want just a lite echo.
There are 3 other delay pedals I like on that list. Keely 30ms Double Tracker Keely DDR-Drive Delay Reverb Pedal (yeah it's more than just a delay) Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Boy
I kind of like delay pedals lol!
The Maxon AD999 has some great delay tones.

For delay, the question is "do you want *a* delay pedal, or do you want one with a particular character?"
I need delay in general ,but I would be unhappy without he character of the Space Echo preamp and multi-head options. I have various other niche things for different coloration ont he dealy/particular features, but at the end of the day, the "what exactly do you need" will answer the question.

I'm a pretty simply guy when it comes to playing. Most real players would likely view me as a complete "simpleton" With that said, I'd need to learn more about these character aspects.

Choosing a delay can take you down a deep well.
I’ll offer this to the subject. A delay with a tap-tempo function is cool. Being able to set a delay based on the tempo of a song - on the fly - is a groovy thing.

Way back in the day when I played out, I didn’t have that feature. Truthfully I didn’t know it existed. If I were playing out again, I’d have tap tempo.
I do use the feature around the house. It’s just cool.

I was looking at some delays with tap tempo and it seems that quite a few that come with it also have a jack for an external tap tempo switch.
Can you tell me why this is a feature? Thanks.

I rarely use my pedalboard anymore but the only one that resides there is a Carbon Copy. Pretty generic run of the mill delay, but I kinda like it. Previously I had a Keeley modded AD9 and was a little put off by what I perceived as a volume drop when turned on. Plus it sounded a little dirty to my ears. I like the spring reverb on my PRII amp but also was never fond of simulated spring reverb in a pedal. I always opted for a more digital hall reverb. I think I just prefer a clean return on delay/reverb.
The Carbon Copy has a modulation function which I think sounds a little wonky as factory set. I tweaked the internal pot to dial it back a little.
But if I was looking for a delay pedal these days I'd likely opt for something with a tap tempo like Leftee suggests.

Vibroluxer-This is for a Boss DD-5 from the mid-nineties and the only one I would know about.
On the DD-5 I plugged a Boss FS-5U (foot switch) into the tempo jack to tap the tempo.
A lot of delays now have a tap tempo button to take care of that.

The Wampler Tape Echo and Carbon Copy Deluxe have homes on my board; both with tap tempo. One is set to short and the other to long. When combined and tapped for sync, it can be a groovy thing indeed.

The Carbon Copy is one I hear mentioned a lot. It certainly came to mind as an option just because of that popular history in my ear.
I know my DD3 did sounded different than the AD999. It seems people talk about the digital delays tend to sound a bit "sterile" or maybe more trebly. I'd say that is a difference I recall when comparing the two.

I read 2 of the manuals for pedals listed on the above site. It looks like the expression pedal port can control various things of which tap is one.

Now that Strymon have released V2 of many pedals the El Capistan V1 can be had used for $200 or less. It's really fantastic. Obviously all the tape echo sounds are top notch but it's possible to dial it in to almost digital delay-style pristine and AD-9-style analog grit and warmth.

I usually use delay as an always on pedal to provide a bit of echo and depth without going to reverb, also to goose up a bit into slapback. The one I had for years was a True Tone Axle Grease, but it croaked and I replaced it a couple months ago with the JHS $99 delay, works in a similar manner. jhspedals.info/collections/delay/products/3-series-delay

Professor, I like that one.
Two sound texture options while retaining very basic simplicity.

I know my DD3 did sounded different than the AD999. It seems people talk about the digital delays tend to sound a bit "sterile" or maybe more trebly. I'd say that is a difference I recall when comparing the two. The digital delay of 40 years ago is NOT today's digital. Yea, you can get 80s voiced ones too, but...at this point, the digital/analog divide for sound options is VERY VERY small to be honest. Even tape versus digital is tiny to a point that my actual tape Space Echo almost never gets turned on any more. The modern Boss ones have the preamp included (which is vital), and both the last-generation RE-20 (of which I have a pair) and the current RE-202 are spitting images save for the hardware modifications I have on my actual one. The 202 in particular does MORE than the original (adds a fourth tape head if you're so inclined!), plus modern goodness. The "warp" switch on the 20 is superior IMO (closer tot he acutal tape twist the knobs to make it go spaceship) to the 202s though for some reason. The digital Echoplex simulators etc are damn good too. Basically, the sea change in digital delay was about 2010-2012 - the first prosumer that got it right (the DL-4 was a pale imitation compared to the actuals, despite being around since 2000 or so) was the Digitech Timebender (including a harmonized option not seen outside of rack units using the Lexicon algos so it tracked VERY well). The Timebender understood the difference between "moving head" (Echoplex) and fixed-head (Space Echo") repeat differences and oscillation differences, and did so VERY convincingly. I still have one.

I got a great deal on a AD999 Pro and I still have the regular AD999. The Catalinbread Epoch Belle arrived and it's pretty nice. It's worth the $100 I paid for it.
The Pro 8s out for delivery and im pretty excited. Will reports back once I've had a chance to play around with it.

Catalinbread makes nice pedals. I’ve got a few of them, although no time based effects. Only distortions, ODs and a Naga Viper.

The Naga Viper is a mean bitch in front of a cranked Marshall. I've had in front of my Vibro Champ Reverb, Lil Dawg Mutt, my Lacey VC15. It's a very good pedal. It makes all my amps smile. Edited because my spell checker wants to replace Vibro with Vibroluxer. It's nice to have a fan in the digital universe.
