My 47 year old son suffered a disabling stroke 10 years ago and is now showing some ambition into recording and playing music again. He used to record on his imac, but with reduced vision and dexterity, that won't work. I am looking for a multi tracking unit that is more basic.
I did look at a Tascam DP 006, I like the fact that you can change track inputs with out physically plugging and unplugging but the unit is small and may be hard to manipulate.
I know there are quite a few here who have been at this for a long time and maybe have run across something that would work for him, so if this rings a bell I would appreciate a point in the right direction. Thanks

I don't really know what's out there for stand-alone multi-track recording devices these days. My best suggestion would be to contact Sweetwater and talk to one of their sales engineers (their term, not mine). They are quite knowledgeable about what's on the market and can help you with suggestions. I have sought out their expertise many times and they have always been very helpful.

Great point! I didn't think of Sweetwater, thanks.

I know nothing about stand alone units these days but it seems to me they may be more cumbersome than a computer program. Smaller screen, crammed in multifunctional buttons, etc. I would think a basic DAW with maybe a larger wall mounted monitor might be a better option, considering that it sounds like he had previous experience on a Mac.

I'd go with a DAW also, 10X easier. And 10x less expensive too.

Yea, I can tell you as someone with not great vision and a ton of physical disabilities - the standalones are menu-diving squintfests. It's their nature - they sound good, but... The DAW route will let him plug it in and hook it up (and you can help) and let him do a TON of stuff. One thing I might recommend, as I have one and it's amazing. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XTouchC--behringer-by-touch-compactIt's not "cheap" but it's not EXPENSIVE either - the motorized faders are very useful for scene recall, and the tactile knobs and switches and faders...make it a joy to use. I've had mine now for a decade and it's still going strong without problems. It's not NECESSARY, but I love having it. Sometimes the screen isn't how I want to make music but I started on analog boxes.

Yea, you'll do just fine there - the actual faders are much easier to see/use than teh tiny dials on a lot of the cheaper digital standalones. It'll sound good, the Zooms pretty much all do. I have a R8 for location recording (shown when I did a week in the Mojave to record with minimal gear and do some spiritual work), and it's something that punches WELL above the pay grade.

That looks nice Argo. Let us know how he likes it please. I had a Tascam 800 that was a little better to use than the Tascam 400 I once had but with it you still have to go through some hoops to record. If the R20 is indeed intuitive to use that would have been the one for me.

I have a 10 year or older Zoom R16, that I have to go through quite a few steps to find and get to tracks. I have even mistakenly mixed several tracks together not to my liking so I started over.
I haven't talked to my son lately but His wife sent me a picture of him using it. They live 3 hours away.
