I forget what I was looking for when I stumbled across this Jackshaft garage door opener. It eliminates that clunky, ceiling mounted chain drive altogether, by attaching directly to the torsion spring shaft. Anyone tried one of these? Looks pretty slick.

I have new neighbors in a new house, and they have this type of opener on both of their garage doors.
Very slick. Very quiet too.
Wish I had them on my doors.

Nice and quite simple. I think I’d go to one of these when one of the current chain units dies.

I almost put one of those on my son's garage because the ceiling rafters are so low. However, I got his regular tracked opener to work.
If you are looking for something quiet, a standard tracked opener with a belt drive is very quiet. I could hear my old chain drive operating while in the house. I can't hear the belt drive unless the house is completely quiet.

I’m in the market for a new opener.
I’ll be checking things out. 😜

My brother has one on his garage door. They are quiet. Another option is belt drive. That’s what we have and it’s just as quiet. You can’t hear either inside the house.
Edit: I should add we both have Lift Master brand. They’re the best, IMO.

a standard tracked opener with a belt drive is very quiet We've had a Lifemaster belt drive since 2017. Much quieter than the chain drive unit it replaced and we've had zero problems with it.

We had on on the garage door of our last home but most importantly we added a battery backup with constant charging.

a standard tracked opener with a belt drive is very quiet We've had a Lifemaster belt drive since 2017. Much quieter than the chain drive unit it replaced and we've had zero problems with it. When I insulated and drywalled our attached garage twenty-five years ago I installed a pair of Chamberlain “Whisper-drive” belt drive openers that have been flawless and quiet in the years since.

The "silent" aspect was one attraction. The other is that losing the overhead chain (or belt) drive would free up ceiling space.

Yes, we have a Liftmaster screw drive opener. Only one issue in 10 years (replaced coupler that links the motor to the screw drive) but it was inexpensive and very easy for me to replace it.

We made a choice and a purchase. Today was a big day for me getting projects moving forward, some of which have been sitting for years and even decades. I had not intended to resolve the garage door opener today, but the chips fell in place and I'm good with it. We have a "Flat Panel" garage door from when the house was built back in the early 70s. I have always kept it because it (IMO) suits the character of the house and adornments. Flat Panel Garage Door by Larry Madsen, on Flickr I wanted plenty of power and also durability. Belt drive was out of the running. I had a Craftsman chain drive that died on us many years ago (read decades). I had been thinking at least 1.5hp chain drive. Queenie and I stopped by Lowe's and Home Depot this morning and found a 2hp screw drive for $300.00 at Lowe's. That is what I will be installing. It is sitting in the garage right now.

LTB, question here.
I had not put much thought to this at the store and I had not thought in terms of screw-drive much at all.
How does the mechanism detach for manual operation … opening and closing the door?

Detaches the same way with a cord. I have a Craftsman 3/4 HP screw drive that has been flawless for over 20 years.

How does the mechanism detach for manual operation … opening and closing the door? On mine there is a short rope with a handle. You pull on it and it releases the door from the opener.

On mine there is a short rope with a handle. You pull on it and it releases the door from the opener. Those can be fished for from the outside. It's a common way to break into your garage, so it's worth the trouble to try to make it harder to do.

With my old chain drive ... when I wanted it locked securely, I clamped a pair of vise-grips on the rail behind the door slider.

I don’t like the zip tie solution. It’s too fiddly if you house is on fire and you have no power.

A long bolt through a hole in one of the tracks. In an emergency this solution won't have people relying on a tool.

Yes. I wasn’t thinking about a “locked all the time” scenario. Just situations like nighttime or away on vacation.
I like the electronic lock in the OP’s video.

Admittedly our garage door security needs are not a big concern for us.
