So I was standing in the grocery checkout this morning a happened to notice that the guy in front of me was buying a pack of cigarettes: a pack, not a carton.
The price: $11.49!
Back when I quit, a pack of cigarettes went for 35¢...

57 cents per cigarette? What's a chain-smoker to do? At those prices, a heavy smoker could (literally) burn through 20 percent of the median household income in a year. Yikes!!!

I remember being outraged and vowing to quit when a pack hit $1.00 in the vending machine at work.
It took a little while longer.

Much to my chagrin the wife continues to smoke about a pack and a half each day. I’ve given up trying to get her to quit. She’s found a less expensive menthol at about $5.50 per pack so ~ $250/month. A name brand would be twice that.

About 20 years back I was in line behind a woman who bought 3 cartons on a brand name cigarette for just about $120. Ouch.

Many dedicated smokers now roll their own. It's way cheaper I hear.
