There are a number of chiropractic offices in my area, and over the years I have, in desperation, stopped off at this one or that one when my lumbar spine rejects all reason and petulantly insists on "banging the gong." I've found relief at the hands of some chiropractors, and been made worse by others. Some make claims of spinal adjustment being the key to health in the human body, since the manipulations cure everything from ... well ... you name it. I came across this interesting tidbit yesterday, which explains a lot.
"The chiropractic industry owes its existence to a ghost. Its founder, David Palmer, wrote in his memoir The Chiropractor that the principles of spinal manipulation were passed on to him during a séance by a doctor who had been dead for half a century. Before this, Palmer was a 'magnetic healer' ".

My Dad had lower back pain for 40+ years. He finally tried out a chiropractor. In 5 minutes he found one leg was 3/8" shorter than the other. A shim in one shoe, and no more pain! So that was worth a try.

I do not believe Chiropractic is an overall health treatment but have had relief from back and beck issues. Using a live chiropractor tho.

Bad genetics and life style has led to a bad back, an invasive surgery suggested by a well respected neurosurgeon. But I'm hesitant to move forward without addressing my fatassery first. Same with chiropractic treatment. The same principle can be applied to blood pressure meds, some cases of sleep apnea, etc. Do I really need a CPAP and higher dose of Losartan or do I simply need to do the obvious and lose 30 lbs? I know weight loss won't "cure" degenerative disk disease, but it sure doesn't help being in a permanent 3rd trimester carrying twins, lol.

Based on the thread title, I thought this was going to be a Starbucks rant...

I have never been to a chiropractor. I've had back pain before....twice with spasms so bad I couldn't walk or stand. They run their course and I move on. If I had something more chronic, I'd be going to a doctor, not a chiropractor.
I don't doubt that many people have gotten relief from them...but there's no way I could let someone manipulate my spine like they do. Kinda like hypnosis, which has been tried several times on me without success, I'm too uptight for that.

In my experience, the "good" chiropractors are kinda like a physical therapist on steroids. I always dismissed them as so much quackery but then, after I rolled my ankle in a ground squirrel hole while practicing softball with the daughters, my wife badgered me to try her chiropractor friend. Before this woman had applied acupressure to some ligaments, my ankle wouldn't bear any weight at all and I was reduced to hobbling around with a cane. The day after she "did her thing", my ankle was again functioning properly and pain-free. Anecdotal evidence, perhaps, but it made me reconsider. Later, she also relieved some nagging, lower back pain I was experiencing.
Are there also also chiropractors who over-sell their curative abilities? Of course. Some medical doctors do so as well, and others are pretty incompetent.
I still remain skeptical about chiropractors who tout "spinal adjustment" as a cure-all. When it comes to helping with soft-tissue pain such as muscle spasms or sprains, a skilled one can sometimes be helpful.

I see a chiropractor every other week for spinal problems in my neck and lower back. I have bone spurs on a couple neck vertebrae and bone on bone on 2 in my lower back. My chiropractor is a neuropathic chiropractor and takes x-rays every 6 months to keep tabs on things. I get a pinched nerve going to my hip from the problems in my lower back and the adjustments always help me. Having my neck adjusted regularly has helped keep the bone spurs from getting any worse over the last 7 years I have been going to him.
I don't believe all the hoopla about chiropractic care helping to cure diseases and such but for musculoskeletal problems I believe they can be helpful. I know it has been for me. I went to see him when I hurt my knee once and he recommended I see a orthopedic doctor so at least he knows his limitations and I trust him because of that. Some chiropractors wouldn't have done that.

I can say that when I first blew out my back at the age of 30 I was in agony and my doc (a DO) performed a chiropractic type maneuver on me that allowed me to walk out of his office. I also know that a neighbor back in the day bought into one who claimed all her problems and pains could be handled through chiropractic manipulation. By the time her pancreatic cancer was diagnosed it was too late.

Being one who has had 3 surgeries on my back having disk’s removed and fused from L5/S1 thru L2/L3 with a lot of titanium screws and hardware I can tell you see if just having the bulging disk trimmed is a lot better. I saw where a guy had this done and was back to work in several days (not months). I wished I had known about this type procedure.
