Now I'm getting emails mentioning the item, saying they'll bring cash and provide a number to text to, We set up a day, time and place, then get a cancelation text an hour or so before because "I can't make it" or "I have an appointment for an eye doctor" etc. Then when I ask when can they make it? crickets...this seems to happen more often than people actually following through on meeting for a purchase. If someone sends an email I'll usually do a quick Google search on their name to see if there are any immediate red flags, Almost feels like people are out to get email addresses, phone numbers, or any kind of info they can get for future spam. CL is really a cesspool these days, I need to figure out how to weed out the scammers.

It also seems like some of these people just want to be a deliberate PITA with no intention to buy or even scam. I've thought about offing some gear but fortunately don't have the financial need. None of my stuff is particularly valuable so my survivors are welcome to give it away, have an open house and nearly give it away, or toss it in the dumpster. The tales I hear about Ebay and Reverb make me believe any market is loaded with scammers and flakes. No thanks.

I hear ya! It happens on Facebook marketplace too. And, as you, I search them out. Usually to find they aren't even registered or they live in another state but say they are more than willing to travel to pick up said item.
I hardly deal with CL anymore for the same reasons. I don't like selling on Reverb so much because of the fees.
The last guitar I bought was on Sweetwater's Used Gear list. He lived close to me and we met at a halfway point, McDonald's. Guitar was exactly as described, and I brought cash. He seemed like a nice guy, we made the transaction and we each headed home.

I was cruising the "general" section CL one time and came across a second-hand inflatable love doll that somebody was trying to sell. That's certainly one item where, unlike a vintage guitar, "original owner" doesn't help to make it any more appealing.
And (anticipating the inevitable wise guy) I was not perusing the "pneumatic companions" section!

Shouldn’t that be found in the “casual relationships” section?

Of course, maybe they've just gotten too dang pricey to be affordable new these days.
I guess nothing is immune from inflation...

I listed some guitar and bass bodies on CL recently. Got a stupidly lowball offer for one and just said no. Another guy made an offer on a bass body. I countered, then didn't hear from him for a week or more. He then offered something slightly less than my counter. I asked when he wanted to pick it up. Haven't heard from him since.
I don't know whether such people are trying to be jerks or just have nothing better to do; but they were around before the internet. In my long ago retail days, there was a guy who called the store to ask the same question every day for weeks. There were enough employees that it took a while for us to realize what he was doing. He ended every conversation with "OK, I'll be down", but never came. His voice was distinctive enough that we would have known if he had. We started messing with him when he called, asking "You gonna be down" before he could say it. He apparently figured out that we were on to him because he started asking a different question; but we would tell him he didn't want that, he wanted the original item. Eventually, he stopped calling.

I have some items, currently listed on CL (Effects pedals), where I explicitly list in the post 'serious inquiries please reply via CL email with a contact telephone and I will call you to discuss any aspects related to the item that you might have.'
Do you think that this happens? To the two responses that I received over the weekend; of course not.
If they are unwilling, or unable, to follow directions then please don't bother to contact me.

Strange - I'm trying to figure out what the motive would be for that..... My guess is that it's compulsive. Maybe there is no rational explanation for irrational behavior?

You gotta be careful, that's for sure. But there are some jewels out there.
I found my 2002 Martin OM-18V on CL a couple of months ago. Two hours away, and at a really good price. They are very scarce, I was lucky to find it.
Best Martin I've ever owned.

Once the grand realization of one’s pneumatic attraction is recognized, a deflated ego follows.
