Just curious.
Was chatting with the cashier at the grocery store, and she's from Bali. She is very talkative telling me what a lovely place it is. She's clearly a little homesick, but also proud of where she's from. I've been invited to the Philippines several times - I seem to keep crossing paths with people from there.
I'll probably never go, and definitely not any time soon. I just keep running into people from that part of the world, and always find them to be the nicest people. It seems most of the time people are just making jokes about sex tourism (the truth is that any place we've stationed GIs gets to be known for the local sex industry), but even Thailand seems like an amazing place to be if you don't care about the red light district.

A tour to SE Asia is on my bucket list. Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and maybe the Philippines and Thailand. I want to go! Umm, with my wife of course.

Badass young gal friend of mine just got back from riding a bike and camping all over Viet Nam and Thailand. She shared amazing photos of landscapes, people, businesses, monkeys, insane scooter traffic, etc. She had a blast and (most) everyone was very friendly and helpful to her. Cost of living is very low so your money goes a long way there. I could not have done that in younger days at my best, but, she is fearless and amazing.

I spent a year in the central highlands of Vietnam where I had a pet monkey for a bit, and have been in Manila, Guam, and Wake Island.

Hong Kong and Sydney are among the places our daughter lived during her modeling days. She saw a lot of that part of the world; and liked Bali and Phuket enough for multiple visits.
Two of our nieces went to Vietnam a few years ago and have talked about going back sometime.

Oooh, I've had a couple friends from Vietnam, many from the Philippines, one from Hong Kong and a couple from Indonesia. I really should get out there.
Someone was recently trying to entice me saying there is a bit of a guitar industry in Cebu, but I don't buy it. I just saw a few small builders, I'm yet to see any large manufactured products from there.

I'm a Vietnam Vet. I have no plans to return to that part of the world. 6 I’m also a Vietnam Vet and would love to go back to see if any of the Vietnamese friends I made survived the end of the conflict. I have friends who have returned (one was a 101st Screaming Eagle decorated vet that participated in a tv presentation about it) who have all said it is a great trip with a warm, friendly population. I’ve always said it is a beautiful country and I’d love to see it when I don’t have to worry about being in somebody's gunsight. I do have a photo DVD of a Vietnam trip that was given to me by my wife’s friend who did a two week visit a couple of years ago, but she never got close to that part of the country I am familiar with.

I'm a Vietnam Vet. I have no plans to return to that part of the world. 6 I did my year (1968-69) and couldn't wait to leave. All of my memories are clouded by the conflict .. along with the leeches, snakes, scorpions, roaches, mosquitoes and monsoons. To me, returning to visit the Nam, would be like the convict who did time at Alcatraz, going back to the now shuttered prison, to see if it smells the same and whether the graffiti he gouged into the walls of his cell is still there.

It is unfortunate so many have bad memories of the area, but it is more than understandable.
I saw recently that there are monkey gangs roaming streets in Thailand - they captured the alpha of one of the gangs, and I so wish I could've seen a monkey mob boss being hauled off in a paddy wagon. I also saw a clip of a monkey in Indonesia stealing a bra. I'm sensing a pattern.

My young tourist friend informed mse that Viet Nam now has a very young population and most know or care little about that war which they consider ancient history. They are fine with American tourists. She also said the street scene and nightlife in Hanoi are amazing.

They are fine with American tourists. She also said the street scene and nightlife in Hanoi are amazing. I was just in getting my latest COVID booster shot and my druggist (guy harpooning my arm) a friend who knows I’m a vet is telling me he just finished a trip to Vietnam and he loved it. He said Hanoi was a lot of crumbling buildings but a lot of development in the south. The people wanted to pose with “Europeans” and that all were friendly and helpful. I’m actually beginning to think I’d like to take my wife there to experience a little of my life from almost 60 years ago. I think it is hard to get to the central highlands, but that is still where I’d like to visit.
